I spent $50 in my first transaction after buying, after credit it was $5 so unsure if it has to be $45+ or not

You need to buy membership and experience yourself. I use both Sam's and Costco membership, both are close to my home. Sam's has unique experience, convenient for online order and drive through pickup, faster checkout using scan and go, more options in cloth, some veggies/dairy products are cheaper or available in small quantity than Costco, its worth trying for sure. For any costco member, it may take few visits to get familiarize Sam's and start liking it. But eventually you will.

It's been a while but Chase cards offered $100 credit in the past for new membership (or $60, can't remember lol).

Also, healthcare workers, and government employees get a $20 discount on membership. I just asked when I went to purchase a membership if there were any discounts or offers and the lady told me that was their only offer. I told her I qualified and she asked for work ID, I told her I didn't have it and she said she'd note my account and just show it next time and they'd give me the discount. When I came back, they didn't refund the card for $20, instead they just gave me a $20 Costco gift card. My badge is very generic but I had a copy of a paystub on my phone just in case. My backup to the backup plan was the person I added as my 2nd person is a gov't employee.

They actually had pretty good membership deal last year which offered $40 Costco Shop Card + $40 off $250+ purchase online and that made it really slick. Basically gave you free membership and you get additional $20 back. I got that deal last year and received that $40 Shop Card and used that $40 coupon for buying a laptop online. Best deal for Costco membership.

Sam's club tends to have more brand name bulk stuff. For example, you can buy Yakult (I think 50 pack).

Also, they sell these frozen chicken nuggets and waffle fries that are similar to Chick-fil-A.

I like Sam's club meats better. You can get cuts like Korean galbi, and tomahawk ribeye.

Another benefit over Costco is their app. The scan and pay via phone is huge, as you can bypass checkout lines. Also, pay at the gas station via app.

I did not receive a confirmation after signing up, either on the page or in my emails but the credit applied without issues on my first purchase at checkout (will not apply the credit if you use scan and go for first purchase)
