Damn. It is not easy to determine the gen of these.

There is some loss of functionality as well. The older ones won't do some of the special automations like candlelight or fireplace, in which they have asynchronous flickering.

What's the impact of purchasing an earlier gen bulb? Loss of some functionality?

Very low impact, only conceptual. The latest two gen/models are slightly brighter. There are deals that pop up from time to time on Costco, for newer models, and one just needs to wait.

Oh nice. I didn't know the newer ones even do that. Thank you. We just bought a new light fixture and it freaking requires 8 bulbs. I have two older Hue, and now deciding whether to get all new 8 ones or just add another 6, but in any case not cheap lol

Gen 1 has a lot more difference than the remaining ones cause colors are not going to be accurae...i believe colors like green just isn't great on them.

As for physical different i think the "gen 3" has a gold philips label on them compare to the black before, so that should be easy to spot.

I dont know how these Geek Squad people can determine what the life span is on the bulbs tho, the latest generation has been out for like 6 years now

Looks to be 3rd generation.
Here is the new listing on BB [bestbuy.com] (same part # 556704). Quite a few of the reviews mention it's 3rd gen

Ahhh.. thank you for this explanation. This explains why "fireplace" option is not seen for my older hue strip.

That wireless wall switch that comes with it is awesome. It's magnetic and removeable, so you can use it instead of your phone or assistant to cycle through your themes or lower/raise the brightness.

Yeah, the switch is what I need most from this kit to be honest.

Me too. All I need is the switch. It used be $20-$25 but now everyone is charging $27+. Tempted to buy this bundle.

Curious why dont you guys buy the bulbs from other brands, no need for the switch to be integrated with Alexa/Google home?
