Just received the following email

Dear Staples Rewards® Member,

Thank you for being a Staples Rewards member. We would like to inform you of the updated Terms and Condition to the Ink & Toner Recycling program beginning on June 2, 2022 (view updated Staples Rewards Terms here). The minimum spend requirement for earning ink recycling will change from $30 to $50.

The Ink & Toner Recycling program terms and conditions include the following: Each Member is eligible to receive Ink and Toner Recycling Rewards ("Recycling Rewards") on ink and toner recycling, as described below, performed at Staples U.S. stores or online at staples.com/rewards, if the Member has spent at least $50 in ink and/or toner purchases at Staples over the previous 180 days. Ink and/or toner purchases made on the date of recycling are included toward minimum purchase requirement. Coupons, taxes, rewards redemptions, and shipping charges do not count towards the $50 minimum purchase requirement. Ink + Toner Resellers and remanufacturers, including companies or individuals that purchase goods with the intention of selling the goods to a third party, are strictly prohibited from earning and redeeming Ink and Toner Rewards. Limit of 10 ink or toner cartridges can be recycled per month.

Thank you for being a Staples® customer and a member of the Staples Rewards program. We value and appreciate your business.

-The Staples Rewards Team.

Of note for Plus members: Limit of 20 ink or toner cartridges can be recycled per month.
Thank goodness they did not reduce that.

Got the email. I also noticed they have (again) removed the information from the section that tells you how long you are qualified to earn recycle rewards for.
Currently, I am over the threshold so will recycle ASAP since even for the new requirement I am qualified as of today.

For those that don't know or need a reminder. You can turn this purchase from every 6 months to every 7 months.

i.e. Purchase ink Jan 15, recycle. continue as normal for the next 6 months. On the 7th month, make sure you recycle prior to 180 days (July 1 or whatever). Then you do not have to spend on ink until August. Rinse and repeat. Just make sure to recycle in the 7th month prior to the 180 days.

Wow, so not only are they increasing the minimum spend, it appears that they are not grandfathering $30 purchases for the past 180 days. i.e. if you spent $40 in the past 180 days, your account will say that you now need to spend an $10 on ink to recycle for future months. While they probably would manually adjust it if you complain, I doubt they will make it automatic. You would likely need to contact them every month for a "one time courtesy adjustment".

Thanks Rastaman.

I just verified the need to bring my ink spend up to $50.00 immediately; notification of the drastic change without a grace period to finish my current 180 day cycle is being greedy. That is the last straw; I am done.

Staples has been trying to eliminate the ink recycling for Rewards program for years. The writing on the wall occurred when they stopped giving high percentage rebates on paper purchases.

question is can we trust their stupid system? mine says i purchased 28.99x2=$58 of ink in the last 180 days. according to my records, I price matched to Amazon and paid 22.99x2=$46.So wonder if I need additional nothing or or $4?. of course there is nothing for $4 but still I wonder

There were $40MM's on paper rebates the last week they did them (if you knew what you were doing) Those days are missed.

When you login to your account, it actually shows you spent $58 and do not need to spend additional in order to recycle? You could always do a test and recycle 1 ink cart. if it doesnt show credit on your account in a few days, you will know if you need to buy more ink. Probably the cheapest method to know for sure. Though Staples could change things and is inconsistent at best.

I suggest you take a screen cap to save and recycle immediately, in case it changed or is updated. Then if it changes you will have proof you recycled before the change. Also as suggested, monitor to make sure it gives you credit within a few days after you recycle.

wow. I should've recycled yesterday if I had known this. I'm still 4 months into the $30 ink purchase. Is it time to say goodbye Staples?

has anyone else noticed how the pricing of the "custom picks" items fluctuates? one day one of your custom picks could be $15, then the next day the price is doubled.
they should be able to lock in the pricing for a period of time for the custom picks items.

It would have been nice for Staples to provide a heads up to this change.

Last week I did a $34 ink purchase and used my 50% Rewards Coupon.

If I had known, I would have instead purchased $16 more to meet the "New" program requirements and be set for the next 180 days.

How about if you want to downgrade from 20 to 10 inks, what are the min requirements to continue? I had a big ink lot purchased last time due to rising ink prices but this day was coming :-(

Currently I pay $50 for the Plus membership + 2 X $30 ink = $110 total to get $480 worth of overpriced junk.

My Plus membership ends in the middle of the month so thinking of not renewing to go to $10/month. So the ink $50 will still be needed I suppose?
