Additionally they are doubling the Member Reward through today (June 5). Usually 10% cashback, currently at 20%.

I am trying to do this, but it looks like it's going to charge for the membership, and then later give you a $30 gift card for use later at REI. The way you wrote the title, it looks like the membership is free, and you get $30. It looks like the membership is $30, but they mail it back to you in the form of a gift card.

Do you receive the $30 gift card? I made a $50 purchase plus the membership last week and still have not received the $30 gift card. I guess I have to wait until June 22.

That's correct. The gift card also likely has a 1 month expiration if it's like when I signed up a few months back. Plan carefully.

I used the $30 bonus to buy the pass even though the fine print says not valid on passes. Didn't want to risk not qualifying with the pass as the $50 purchase.

Bought at midnight, got the $30 bonus when I woke up.

Does it have an expiration date? This comment on their website still leaves me wondering:

Member Bonus Card received in store will be valid one day after receipt and expire on 7/31/22 11:59pm Pacific Time.

Digital Member Bonus Card can be redeemed on or before the expiration date on the Digital Member Bonus Card (delivered via email).

My online one was set to expire 1 month after it was sent, not on 7/31.
Seems like if you want it to expire on 7/31 you need to do it in store.

I actually called and yeah you're right it's 30 days but they had a great counterpoint, you can use it on food, so yeah he sold me on it lol
All in all the lifetime membership essentially for free is a great deal once you get into all the benefits included.
