Do these need a constant water supply?

Ehhhh, how would you expect it to work, without having a constant supply? Pretty convinced the answer is yes! But have no experience with them

Maybe it store water in a reservoir. I don't have any landscape irrigation constantly on.

It connects to a garden hose.

I bought this last summer when it was $13 off and it caused my hose to split right below where you connect. I guess the constant pressure from the water being on 24/7 was too much.
It worked OK though.

Do you have it near where humans don't go? Or cut off the water when people are around?

Don't they use this as a way to deter unsheltered people too?

That's going to be a common problem with most hoses... It's hard to find hoses that are rated for constant pressure.

I have one at at the top right corner and bottom right corner of my house, where we have some small gardens. Theyre set in such a way I am able to leave them on constantly without fiddling with controls and can still access the gardens (albeit just from one side) I get sprayed about once a month, typically while mowing and forgetting to switch it off for then.
It takes a bit of creativity and luck to get them in a perfect spot, but I've been impressed with the sensor and tweaks it lets you make.

Seeing some complaints about the hose splitting, I use:
Premium 5/8 in. Dia x 50 ft. Commercial Grade Rubber Black Water Hose

That you can get at home depot and that wirecutter recommends. Been very happy with it with no issues.

Is this sensitive enough to detect squirrels and chipmunks? Need something for my veggie garden.

It must have been too much pressure from the water being on 24/7.
