I just bought one for my edifier bookshelf speakers connected to my pc and i just set it at a little over 1/4 gain and matches pretty nicely. I know there are much better subs out there but for less than $200, i feel this is good for the price

Background - I'm very much into home theaters, running an atmos setup with 7 surround speakers + 4 ceiling speakers, 3 subwoofers and 4x couch shakers. It's mostly budget equipment (all 11 speakers are the SONY CORE series, the 3 subs are all klipsch), so I'm not comparing it to $25,000 speakers.
People will say that the R-12SW and R-12SWi are the same as the R-120SW, which they're not.
The R-12SW/i come off very "boomy" and loose-sounding compared to the R-120SW (and the R-10SW -- the 10" version of the speaker sold at costco) which come off very punchy with a "tight" bass. It's hard to describe it any other way, but you'll notice the boomy'ness on the R-12. This could not be fixed by repositioning it (I've even put it in the exact spot as the R-120SW which sounded great, and had the same issue)
With that said, it is a passable subwoofer and the wireless in this model is very good. Great for throwing it in a closet or anywhere in a room without running a cable to it (you will still need to provide power though).
At lower gain, it's not so bad -- keep it around 30-40% and it's usable, but the higher you turn it the worse it gets. Whether it's for movies, music, games, you will notice the boomyness (and not in a good way!)
I ended up positioning my 2x R-12's behind a couch to add a punch to it, and using the R-120SW as a main subwoofer.
I only mention this because many people will say that the R-12SW is the same as the R-120SW (they have a very similar look and specs). The R-120SW goes on sale a couple times a year for $199 / $229 / $249 and would recommend it as an upgrade over this, unless you need the wireless capability.
