I have a couple pairs of Columbia water shoes and I would recommend them. I had the same issue with sand/gravel with my Merrills. The Upper mesh of the Columbias will keep the pebbles/most of the sediment out and there are holes under the soles that drain out the sides of the shoe so that there isn't as much drag walking through the water. If you need something with serious traction look for the PFG (Pro Fishing Gear) models. The pair I wear most often for taking the dogs to the river just looks like a regular pair of shoes. Got them from a SD posted a while back, pairs ranged on sale from ~$35-50 depending on model.

Costco used to carry Speedo Water Shoes. Essentially sneakers with holes protected by mesh in the holes. $20 or so. But not available anymore at Costco And elsewhere nowhere near that price . I wore out two pairs mainly on Sups Kayaks etc. I bit on one of these here
