"2 person tent" = room for 1 person + backpack

The way tent capacity is calculated is by the maximum number of people that can fit when arranged head-to-foot with nothing else in the tent.
It's SD...people want a 4 person tent that fits their packs, George Forman grill, and weighs 1.5 pounds. All for $100 or less.
How wide are you guys? This tent's floor dimensions of 88x52in easily accommodates two 72x22in camping pad, which is a common size. Still have 16in at your feet to stand up your backpack, or smarter yet place it under the head of your pad to create a pillow.

Wow, you've just made a compelling argument for sleeping on a twin mattress.

I don't know what else to tell you. You can definitely fit 2 people into 2 person tent, but most people like the extra space. If you don't want to leave gear outside, if you have to spend a half day waiting out a storm, or if want to just sprawl out a little bit... Size up.

Nobody is going to be backpacking the deep backwoods with this thing anyway if you're car camping, there's no little reason not to get something a little bigger.

When buying a tent to sleep comfortably with gear always divide the # of people the manufacturer says it holds by 2.. this is a 1 person tent

I just have to ask, because I am confused about your last paragraph.
Are you saying this isn't a backpacking tent or are you saying that you should get a bigger tent if car camping?

I have different REI branded products, but I do not own this particular tent. It appears to be a decent budget backpacking tent. If you are car camping, get a larger tent with a decent rainfly--it will not matter that the tent is heavier and takes more space. If you have this tent and expect much rain, I would pack a lightweight waterproof tarp to hang or cover the top of this tent.

Lol yup, I use a 4 person tent just for myself. All my friends make fun of my small tent because they're couples with 6 person tents. Of course this is car camping so we don't care about trying to save weight.

I don't see who this tent is marketed towards.

A backpacker would get a half or quarter dome with a full rainfly because you can then put your pack in the vestibule and use the entire tent for sleeping. Such two person tents actually fit two people. Our scout troop uses them all the time. Those tents also leak less because rain never hits the inner wall.

Car campers generally don't care about tent size/weight so a larger tent would likely be more comfortable.

This seems like it is meant to be a cheap tent parents would get for kids so they can have the larger tent to themselves.

Maybe the person who wants to try backpacking and intends to upgrade after a few uses? I'll never buy a tent with fiberglass poles again, they don't last, they break instead of bend and generally are inferior. Look for closeouts at dicks, I scored a sierra designs full moon 2 for $110.

Sure this tent is fine, but not really a deal, you can get a sierra designs, wenzel, Coleman, stansport basic dome tent with fiberglass poles for this price at target.

A couple things... Backpacking tents tend to be more narrow to save on weight, which is where the idea what you need to size up comes from.

You may technically have space at the foot and a few inches on the sides, but with every square inch covered with pads and gear, and the walls angled in, it'll feel cramped pretty quick.

Think of it like a Smart Car. A lot of people could technically fit in one, must folks would be more comfortable in something even a little bit bigger.

Shaq drives a smart car... apparently they're pretty roomy 😂

My general rule is to meet the stated capacity for most tents, the occupants had better be either a) children or b) extremely close friends.

Dont get me wrong, Im not advocating a new backpacker get a $1k ultralight tent. But there is a minimum bar that should be met when packing the 10 essentials to provide some comfort and avoid equipment malfunction. The lack of a place to store gear and the fragile poles makes this inadequate in my opinion. It could make the user uncomfortable at best and unsafe at worst, and likely lead to an unpleasant experience and discourage them from backpacking.

I got an REI Passage 2 on sale for under $100 (~$80 if memory serves me correctly). That is a great entry level tent and includes a footprint. There are other decent 2 person tents out there in the $100 price range. Alps mountaineering Linx is another good example. Yes that is nearly twice the price as this tent but you get poles that dont break, full rainfly that not only keeps you drier but also has a vestibule for your gear and frees up tent space. You get much more bang for your buck.
