Google released a free bonus update for Pixel 3 and 3XL owners today. Enables Pixel 3s to use VOLTE Roaming (voice over LTE), meaning that they won't get turned into phones that suddenly drop calls as you move from one carrier LTE zone into another as 3G is being disconnected across most carriers. (AT&T turned off 3G in February; TMobile turns it off July 1; Verizon turns it off December 31 2022). On some phones/carriers you will get the update prompt (or you can do an update check manually via Settings>System); on many other phones you won't get it (yet?). In my own case, I did not get the update notification across any of my six Pixel 3s, and as of this writing I still do not see it even when I use the manual update check on my remaining 4 un-upgraded Pixel 3s. Previous to this update, I would regularly get dropped calls or calls that simply never registered; and this is in heavily covered Los Angeles.

1. [https://android.gadgethacks.com/h...-0189128/] Enable Developer Mode & Enable OEM Unlocking
3. [https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb Install Google WinUSB driver
4. [https://flash.android.com/ Use Google's Flash Tool via Browser to flash your device to Build SP1A.210812.016.C2, (Global, Standard Pixel 3/XLs) or 12.0.0 (SP1A.210812.016.B2, Jun 2022, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone AU)

Continue enjoying your Pixel 3 into the post-3G future.

ETA: Yes, this IS for Pixel 3 and 3xl. Yes, this will allow your phone to use VOLTE on ATT and TMobile. Yes, this is an official build direct from Google, and the flash tool is also from Google. Yes, I have done it myself and it is pretty nice, as the alternative was to trade them in for OP Nord 200s [t-mobile.com]. The process took 5 minutes to enable developer mode, enable usb debugging, and enable oem unlocking; 5 minutes install Google WinUSB driver; 2 minutes to unlock via Fastboot; 5 minutes to install C2 build via Android Flash Tool.

Too bad us Pixel 2XL users get no love since updates stopped in October.

Edit: okay. After reading the original article, the info in OP is just wrong. Firstly, this update is for Pixel 3a's and newer, and NOT for the regular Pixel 3.

Second, VoLTE already exists on all of these phones. What this update brings is VoLTE Roaming.

That is all.

Last edit: Google also rolled this out for regular Pixel 3. Since I'm on Verizon with a bootloader locked Pixel, I'll have to hope Verizon supports this update.

I see others mentioning an update after the October update. What was it? My phone says last updated October, but I know there was a small update after that didn't change when last updated. Currently on C1.
I'm also still on C1, which I thought was the last we're getting. I'm on AT&T.

No, it is not wrong.
The EARLIER June 2022 update was for 3a and newer, leaving Pixel 3 out.

The build in question IS for Pixel 3 and 3XL, which is why it is of interest. https://www.androidpolice.com/the...st-update/

Yes, this is what we all thought, too.

Agreed but word of caution for people: OTA update may be disabled for a number of reasons - if your device is locked and has custom software, updating may break it. If you have root and upgrade, you could lose root and data. In ideal circumstances, default version of Android using OTA update is fine, but there's a lot of custom variations out there these days.....

tl;dr before updating, check online to see if anyone has had issues after updating. Check your model in settings. Probably better to wait a few weeks for results lol
I am not sure how this applies. We are talking about a single model here, the Pixel 3/3XL. There is to my knowledge no custom software version. There were some Verizon pixels that had their bootloader locked (and ostensibly had the option to unlock them disabled), but 1) turns out many could indeed be unlocked just fine - these were the $100 pixels from woot if you recall 2) if your bootloader is truly locked, you wouldn't be able to complete this process anyway as it simply wouldn't let you do it.

I have done the upgrade to both one Verizon woot model and one Google store model. No issues, as would be expected for a build directly from Google applied to the Google phone for which it was intended.

Yes that was my experience. Probably eventually might get it, or not. The flash tool is direct from Google so about as safe as you can get.

none of my six pixel 3 triggered the c2 update as of this writing
It depends on your settings. But you can manually force it by pressing the "check for update".

Finally, without updating it, your phone won't turn to brick as OP claimed. I believe Pixel 3 always had VOLTE. The update just brings VOLTE "roaming".

My bad. Just the entire part about having VoLTE instead of VoLTE Roaming. Better?

I would posit that a phone's usefulness is related to how reliable it is in terms of connectivity. In any case, perhaps it is best to read the release note from Google, directly:

Impact of the 3G cellular network shutdown in the U.S.
In 2021, carriers in the U.S. announced they would phase out their 3G networks. As a result, some devices that don't support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) or VoLTE roaming may lose voice calling services, including calls to 911, or connectivity when the 3G networks are shut down. For the latest information on the 3G phase out, visit the FCC website.

For U.S. customers, if you're using an older device where VoLTE was not enabled for your carrier you will experience issues on your home network and we recommend you upgrade to a device that has VoLTE enabled for your carrier. Devices without VoLTE roaming support will not be able to roam on other LTE US networks. Contact your carrier for information about whether VoLTE or VoLTE roaming is supported for your device.

For international customers who are roaming in the U.S. and on a device without VoLTE roaming support, you will lose connectivity and/or voice calling capabilities while on affected carrier networks in the U.S. Contact your carrier for information about whether VoLTE roaming is supported.

June 2022 software update
In June 2022, Google released a software update that enabled VoLTE roaming for many U.S. and global carriers. This allows many Pixel devices to roam in the U.S. with VoLTE, if your carrier supports VoLTE roaming. Contact your carrier for more information.

The software update is available for the following Pixel devices, if applicable for your carrier:

Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL
Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL
Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL
Pixel 4a
Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5
Pixel 5a (5G)
Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro

In the US, carriers get their grubby hands on the software and do little tweaks. I haven't tested each one but wanted to warn people just in case. It sucks to not have a phone due to a botched update

Nah. Without this, they turn into mini WiFi tablets.

I still don't get it. Pixel 3 and 3 xl are 4G, right? Do they still depend on the 3G network?

This is for VoLTE Roaming, which they did not previously support. However, your carrier and the carrier you're roaming on both have to support the feature. Previously your call would switch to 3G for roaming. (No idea why not 4g non-VoLTE). With 3G being switched off for most networks, your phone call would simply drop if VoLTE Roaming isn't enabled

This. Thank you for being more clear than I have been.
If you discovered that your phone always drops off in a certain area while driving home, this is why. Even in a highly covered area like Los Angeles, this happens regularly.

On my unlocked pixel 3 I've tried to get it to install the update OTA, but it does'nt see it when I "Check For Update." Still on C1

Does the OP's side loading method overwrite the phones firmware, or does it just install the update? I really don't want to be back at the factory settings, and lose all the data on the phone.
