Bought this when they were $35. Did the firmware update and it's the best 35 bucks I ever spent. Made my 2003 vehicle feel more up to date. You can even add a backup cam if you want.

Looks like an good deal. Apparently it needs a firmware update out of the box or it has a reboot issue. Update fixes it
This is correct. This unit needs the firmware update immediately. I mean as soon as the unit boots. Otherwise if you decide to go in and play with the head unit before the firmware upgrade you will have a lot of problems. I've installed a handful of these head units and they have all worked perfectly after the firmware upgrade.

Can you share the FW source on this? Thanks in advance

Their website has it. Just google it. I believe it may be in the manual also.

Because these are mechless. Meaning they do not have disc drives. If you remove the disc drive there really are very few guts inside of a head unit. besides, I would hardly call 13 Watts RMS Per speaker any kind of reasonable amplification. It's just basic wattage to play music at very basic reasonable levels.
I realize they are mechless. I was comparing this Power Acoustik to the ATOTO mentioned earlier, which is more expensive and much skinnier.

Don't bother if you live in Phoenix. The heat makes these unusable and damages them. My son installed 2 of these in less than a year. He went to something else after the 2nd one wouldn't work anymore

ATOTO is another really good budget brand with Carplay/AA. Picked up the head unit because I wanted a backup cam and carplay in my old truck and it surprised me how good it was for $150. If I knew it was this good I would have splurged and got the wireless carplay version

edit: I bought the F7 for anyone interested
Hey, I was looking at the F7 EX for our car, but seemed like reliability was all over the place and all the online reviews are really just marketing pieces. Cool to hear from an actual user. How long have you had it without issue?

A number of people reported bricked units while applying the firmware (which is intended to fix some problem). Also, occasional random reboots (not surprising at this price range).

Also the included speakers are reported to be not much better than stock speakers (not surprising for a bundled item).

As a price/value comparison, here is a different unit (Hodozzy brand) [amazon.com] on Amazon with similar Android Auto/CarPlay features, bundled with rear backup camera (instead of 4 speakers) for $66 ($71 - 7% clip coupon). One can easily find a pair of 6.5" car speakers for under $25-30 (Blaupunkt, Kenwood, Pioneer) so I'd say bundled Power Acoustik speakers are probably worth 2/$20 or less (esp if they are the wrong size for your car). OP's unit does have better reviews than the Hodozy r

"A number of people reported bricked units while applying the firmware"......

check out the reviews for the Hodozzy you linked, the reviewers aren't exactly raving about it - I think I'd take my chances with the Power Acoustik personally

my old car factory radio with integrated CD player(cd stuck inside and can't get it out) in my old Honda Accord has not worked....well the radio works so I can listen to radio FM music, but can't listen to my personal cd music. Can this new stereo system replace it? how difficult is it install this?

Can I mount this unit outside? Rather than in dash?

I've got one of these. I missed (well, tried, but I think all the store employees bought them at that price) the $35 deal but jumped when Walmartdotcom dropped the price to $99 around Thanksgiving. Some thoughts:
  • Firmware update is a necessity. Constant restarts without it. Takes 5 minutes.
  • Screen is good -- seems better than the cheap Dual/Boss/Jensen units.
  • CarPlay works great.
  • Android Auto won't launch. I've tried 3 phones, about 12 cables (all 3' or less), including the OEM cable for each. I've also tried three different wireless Android Auto dongles (Motorola, and then two latest DriveLink models). Nothing makes it launch. Anyone have any suggestions? Has AA worked for you in this unit? I got it to connect one time for 5 seconds on one phone, and that was it.
  • Warranty is only 3 months if you install yourself. 12 months with install from Authorized Installer, but they don't list any of those on the website so Confused
So basically it functions fine for me as a bluetooth (calls, music) head unit, but I really want Android Auto to work. I'm past both the Walmart (holiday, extended) return policy AND the crappy Power Acoustik warranty. I'm pretty sure my credit card extended warranty will take care of me, but if I can get any reports that it actually works I'd rather have a working unit (especially after all the time I put into installing it, soldering the harness, etc) than my small amount of cash back.

I spoke with a Power Acoustik tech support rep and confirmed that a bug still exists with the unit even after the firmware update where the unit will randomly reboot. Tech support stated that the bug is due to the "RDS" setting turned on. Once I turned off "RDS" my CarPlay no longer randomly reboots. This might fix your Android Auto issue.

I'm impressed that you were able to even talk to tech support. I've called, left messages, and emailed. No support for me. Thanks for the tip: I have RDS turned on and my carplay works flawlessly, but I'll give it a try for Android Auto to see if it helps!
