Rebuilt or not, this model simply doesn't get it done. Not effective even for a tiny room. Returning to Walmart.

Toshiba products are hit-and-miss when it comes to quality and reliability. Some are stellar. Others, not much.

This is a retail price for a refurbished unit, which means someone was unsatisfied with it. Portables are already noisy and inefficient; 6,000 btu in a portable isn't going to do anything.

If you have any ability to hire a handyman or watch a DiY video, buy a traditional window unit and do the extra work to mount it, even if you have a sliding or casement window. It will be quieter and your electric bill will thank you

Not all portables are noisy or inefficient. Toyotomi portable air conditioners are extremely quiet (I can sleep with ours on, and visitors have commented on how quiet it is). Downside is that they are pricey and hard to find.

I'm using a cheap portable unit I bought last year. It couldn't suck enough until I bought a $15 ductwork insulation sleeve for the exhaust hose.

Without that insulation, the exhaust hose was getting so hot it was undoing the cooling. The exhaust hose was running ~100 degrees and with the sleeve it's just about room temp.

It's still not as good as a window unit but at least it cools now. Highly recommend a sleeve to anyone with a single non-insulated exhaust hose.

Toshiba is no longer made in Japan. I am not even sure if it's still a Japanese company or sold off to China with the Toshiba label slapped on their products.

Is there such thing as a portable AC unit that doesn't need an exhaust outlet?

All portable ACs are trash, single hose portable AC is rotten trash.

Physics and thermodynamics says... no. Swamp cooler maybe?

Or a window unit, but then again the radiator is outside.

My office doesn't have windows that open unfortunately.

I agree that there are exceptions, but they're rare and untypical.
The vast majority of portable units that you'll find at retail or warehouse sale are single-hose clunkers, even the most celebrated brand names, are noisy, subject to breakdown, and incredibly inefficient.

In most cases portables are acquired without much planning or foresight, bought on impulse ("tired of living without a/c"), and many because of the misplaced belief they're needed to fit a non-standard window opening. Many then fail or are otherwise abandoned at curbside when they disappoint.

My general point, is that for the amount you'll spend on a basic 1200btu (minimum to have a chance of cooling anything) portable ($400+ tax), many times, you could buy a 6,000-8,000 btu window unit and pay a handyman to custom install it in the awkward window opening. You achieve at least the same cooling level at 50-75% of the energy usage, prevent water damage, don't lose any floor space, and typically have a more reliable unit.
