I've worn TEVAs for many years, and I agree with you that thinner rubber and more EVA foam is their new norm. Even still, the Hurricanes are good strap saddles.
Chacos, which also are sliding downhill, are more durable, but heavier and more expensive.
My current favorite strap saddles are the ECCO Exowrap 3-Strap. They are the most comfortable sandle I've ever worn, equally as good as a $120 sneaker, but they still have issues. They cover the foot more then the Hurricanes/Chacos so they run warm. While they have a lugged sole, it's not super aggressive and the polyurethane sole isn't a grippy as rubber.
All I'm saying is all of the sandals I know of have compromises, but with a half dozen pairs, the Hurricanes still get rotation. If I'm out kayaking and short hiking, the TEVAs still work really well for this price.
I will say that in general I avoid eco-friendly badged clothing items as they tend to lack durability which doesn't seem that eco at all. I'd stick to normal Hurricanes.

I'd argue that standard Hurricames are still worth it at this price.

Yes they look cheap like $17 crocks i bought a few years ago but those were nicer shitty brown color. They were comfortable and good for beach sand water but seasonal. That's why i still have them but earlier this summer rear strap broke in one and i had to use duct tape. Still usable but i have to find a matching color tape to make it look nicer. I went back to cheapest original tevas that used to be under $20 at sports authority. They were $65 at amazon. Not the same sandal they used to make. I didn't want to go back to tevas after seasonal sandals fell apart after little use in the past. Couldn't find anything cheaper than $60 that's also a good fit. This may be a good price for recession inflation but i won't buy black color anything.
