5800x + B550 from Amazon at around $350
64GB RAM looks not necessary. Probably you can consider upgrade to DDR4 CL16 3600MHz 16GB or 32GB @around $150, or save some money no upgrade.
NVME SSD? maybe another $100
GPU, hard to tell, wait till GTC to make a decision. But you still have at least $500 left, even enough for a 4070
Thx for all the feedback!

The things I want to keep are my:
1. 550W Platinum fanless power supply
2. Case (Fractal design R5)
3. My Noctua NH-U14S fan cooler.
Things I should replace:
1. (current) 32 > 64GB of RAM
2. Processor
3. Mobo
4. Graphics card (GTX970 > ______??______)
What do you guys think? Get new gen or last year's? Trying to keep a budget of $1200
Modern games are starting to take advantage of more cores than they used to, but you'll still be hard pressed to find a PC game that uses more than 4 threads. The 5800x also runs extremely hot because all eight cores are packed into one CCD. These chips are designed to run hot, but higher temps mean lower boost frequencies so you might actually lose performance unless you have a high-end cooling setup.
I have a 240mm AIO on my 5800x, and I had to spend a whole lot of time tweaking the undervolt for each core to keep it from throttling.
But I have to replace mb anyway, makes me hesitate either should I go with previous gen or wait a couple months to seize some discounts on DDR5 and new gen.
really depends, ddr5 will give performance for 1080p gaming but if you are shooting for 2k-4k it will be less noticeable
NVMe 970 1TB SSD booting, and another 500GB SSD for swap. Dual screens. I lowered resolution from 4K to 2K on 1 screen I work on, and it helped a lot using LightRoom.
Lightroom6 classic(non-cloud) needs to be faster. Thinking of the 5900x chip instead of this one, with maybe using same ram, and adding some (if ports permit).
Wondering if others have much experience in this area of usage?
I tend to almost buy Asus motherboards exclusively, but am open. Thinking of getting the 11900k instead due to the inclusion of a relatively good motherboard.
