We ended up going with a Novaform Serafina Pearl (from Costco) and put a 2" latex topper on it, very happy with it so far. Put an end to my back pain.

I would much rather purchase a mattress that provides information on the type of memory foam topper and base foams that are used as well as the foam densities and thickness. During the past +15 years I've had a number of great experiences getting a combo memory foam topper and foam base mattress from foamfactory.com (FF). I can attest that their foam densities are accurate as you can decipher the density if you know the foam layer size and shipping weight. Believe me, just b/c a mattress manufacturer says they are using a 5lb/in foam density in their beds doesn't mean they actually are. FF also cuts their foam accurately and they ship quickly (and for free).
As an example, right now you can get a 9" queen matteress made with with a topper that consists of 4" of 5lb density memory foam (which is the highest memory foam density available on the market) + a 5" HD36 foam base (which will provide a firm base) for less than $550.

FF provides you with a zippered mattress cover for free or you can upgrade it to a more expensive cover/order your own from Amazon to create the illusion of a single mattress if you'd like (though it's not necessary).
The "memory foam" layer in a foam mattress is always the top layer of the mattress. This layer is always the most expensive part of the bed as it is responsible for providing you comfort and a restful sleep. However the type, density and thickness of the memory foam layer is rarely reported to the consumer (similar to this product). The quality of the memory foam layer is based on the density of the memory foam (the more dense that longer it will last) and it's thickness (the more you weigh, the more you will compress this layer and the thicker it will need to be). For a standard adult, I always get this highest density I can buy and usually 3" thickness will suffice. If you're a larger adult (+250lbs; like me
The foam base is the layer of the mattress that provides you with support when lying on the mattress. You can get different levels of firmness by changing the type of base foam layer used. I usually opt for using HD36-HQ foam as the base as it provides a medium firmness which I like but FF also sells a LUX-HQ base which provides addtional firmness if desired. Generally I get the thickess level of base foam possible.
The base foam layer, though thicker and firmer than the memory foam topper, is also much less dense and will most likely need replacing in 8-10 years. When people report that their foam mattress is "saggy" that usually means that the base layer has degraded over time causing you to sink into the bed to an uncomfortable depth. However, since you are purchasing a layered mattress, you can simple remove the old foam base and replace it with a new one to regain your mattress' firmness (a queen size HD36 base costs $275).
I'm still sleeping on my original king sized foam mattress I purchased 15 years ago. I replaced the HD36 foam base about three years ago to replenish the mattress' firmness.
I used my old foam base to make additional patio pillows and dog beds. I no longer purchase pre-fab mattresses and have changed out all of our beds in our house to this memory foam-HD36 base and everyone is very comfortable when sleeping. I've also done this for my elderly parents and they have also been very happy with the results.
The only caveat to using foam mattresses is to get the best results (combination of comfort and support) you should provide a strong flat base to rest this type of mattress on. For this reason I'll add a piece of 1/2" to 3/4" OSD plywood to the top of the bed frame if necessary (for frames that use slates or springs). Most of our bed frames are platform beds so this is unnecessary.
