My cat's don't *love* it, but they eat it and don't complain; I've only recently switched to this after researching cat food. I have five indoor-only cats, they are free-fed dry and get wet food as a treat.
* The cheap cat food is sprayed/coated to trick the cats into eating it, they *think* they are getting something delicious, but it's full of crap their bodies don't need. Because they don't get the protein and proper nutrition from the cheap food, they eat more of it, usually puke it up (and the cheap stuff stains carpeting), and poop more (which is also stinkier).
Better quality cat food, they won't eat as much (cost-saving) because it contains the nutrition they need. If they do happen to puke it up, it doesn't stain the carpet. They poop less often and it's not as stinky.
I've have over 50 years of experience with loving my various cats, the above info is related to that.
The food that I buy for mine:
Costco's Kirkland
Iam's
Purina One
Nutro
Blue Buffalo (when there is a good deal; not many these days)
Target's Kindfull (my cat's don't eat this as much as the other's if they have a choice between two brands)
If you must go cheap, then Purina Naturals seems to be okay.
* Stay away from Meow Mix, Kit n'Kaboodle, Friskies, 9 Lives, etc - you think you're getting a good deal, but you're not.
Side tip - best deal for cat litter is Target's brand [target.com] in the bucket 35lbs for $12 (10% off order pick-up this week's sale; otherwise they'll have "Buy 2, get $5 gift card" fairly often).

Poor quality ingredients: by-products
My mom always tried feeding her cat better food because of recommendations like this and now the cat has had health problems before she turned 15. She was told that too much protein causes health problems so foods with higher protein count (like those with real meat as the top ingredient) can cause certain health problems (I can't remember which). Her friend said she's been feeding her cat Meow Mix for 20 years with no health problems. I tried feeding our new cat better food (because that's what we tried to do for our dog, who ended up dying from diabetes at only around 10-11 years old), but she won't eat it. We finally tried the Meow Mix (after hearing that recommendation) and she eats it up. I tried switching, but she won't have it. But I'm also trying to mix in some wet food every once in a while.
"She was told' is not medical science.
In the wild, cats eat meat. Nothing else. Certainly not undigestible corn and grains.

I agree about the corn, I don't feed it to my dog..or beef, I don't think a Doxie has ever taken down a cow. I inherited 3 cats and am just continuing what they always were fed. I have one, inside, 12yo that is overweight, hasn't been out of this house since kitten vet visit. I'd like someone to take the "outsiders". A big neutered white w/grey saddle, attention starved and tiny calico/Siamese spayed. My parents loved them all. I'm not a cat person just doing the best I can, for now.
I suggest a raw diet or very good wet food such as Tiki Cat for the inside cat to lose weight. And scheduled meal times. No free feeding Just like Jackson Galaxy (My Cat From Hell) would say. Plus regular exercise outside on a leash. And play.

And, I thought your vet "told" you that the food you fed your cat caused their kidney issues. What makes your vet the all knowing vet god?
Fed is best. Do whatever you can to feed your pets. Times are tough. If you can't afford premium foods, don't stress about it.
