The entire #1 New York Times bestselling Magicians trilogy, including The Magicians, The Magician King, and The Magician's Land, now available in one ebook bundle

The Magicians
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he's secretly fascinated with a series of children's fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams may have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined . . .

The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination.

The Magician King
Quentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillory—a fictional utopia—was actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring.

Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets off—only to somehow wind up back in the real-world and not in Fillory, as they'd hoped. As the pair struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, Quentin is forced to rely on Julia's illicitly learned sorcery as they face a sinister threat in a world very far from the beloved fantasy novels of their youth.

The Magician's Land
Quentin Coldwater has lost everything. He has been cast out of Fillory, the secret magical world of his childhood dreams that he once ruled. With nothing left to lose he returns to where his story began, the Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic. But he can't hide from his past, and it's not long before it comes looking for him. Meanwhile, the magical barriers that keep Fillory safe are failing, and barbarians from the north have invaded. Eliot and Janet, the rulers of Fillory, embark on a final quest to save their beloved world, only to discover a situation far more complex—and far more dire—than anyone had envisioned.

Along with Plum, a brilliant young magician with a dark secret of her own, Quentin sets out on a crooked path through a magical demimonde of gray magic and desperate characters. His new life takes him back to old haunts, like Antarctica and the Neitherlands, and old friends he thought were lost forever. The Magician's Land is an intricate and fantastical thriller, and an epic of love and redemption that brings the Magicians trilogy to a magnificent conclusion, confirming it as one of the great achievements in modern fantasy.

I saw this and immediately went to Amazon to check it out. I loved the TV show and was hoping the books would be more of the same. A number of the book reviews I read on Amazon and other book review sites stated the books are quite different. Top Amazon reviews seem relatively positive, but reviews on one of the common book review sites tend to be a bit lower. For $1 a book, I'll probably give it a shot anyway.

I enjoyed these books... read them in my late 20/early30s... anyone who grew up reading Harry P would enjoy them. I also liked the first few seasons of the show; I think the books were maybe a bit better, however they diverged a decent bit if memory serves me right - so it will be entertaining in a new way. No brainer for $3

off hand I would say mature-teen based on the tv series, which was great but contained a lot LBGTQ and "straight" relations, not sure if the book contains the same but depending on your feelings on the subject....

Personally, I don't feel that content is necessary or adds any value, may not be ideal for younger readers.

Young adults and older will be fine. Teens, particularly mid/late teens would probably be fine too depending on their maturity level. There's sex drugs and violence (the hedonism hinted at in the description).

The books are more grounded. Less comedy based. But I like it. After season 3 the show is too different and I don't like it regardless of the book. Think of them as separate stories. But the books do have a better ending

How close does the show follow the books? I really liked the show so I assume the books would be much better so just curious.

Edit: Missed the comment above. Disregard.

I've always wanted to check out the series. Anyone have a recommendation on if I should read the books first or watch the tv series first?

Doesn't matter if you watch or read first. They're incredibly different.

I found the show to be boring and not nearly as fantastical as the books, primarily due to practicality and budget I assume. For instance, imagine Aslan in Narnia. Now picture instead of a giant talking lion with moonlight constantly shining on him, it's just some dude in lion-esque makeup and facial prosthetics. There is a direct correlation to this specific example but I won't spoil it for you because it's pretty funny. This happens for literally every fantasy creature in the series, and really speaks to all the storylines. They're all watered down into something more filmable, while also adding filler and the "return to normalcy" due to having to have each of the main cast members appear fairly regularly for at least the first four agonizingly drawn out seasons, but by the time the last season rolled around I was so checked out that I just couldn't give two shits anymore. It's ironic because all I kept reading about this series was how it was so different from regular TV and it had the bravery to do really big things, but in fact it was practically reading off of TVTropes.org. The whole plumber business really pushed me away and was the beginning of the end.

Eek! Cringy comment. Think before you type, this isn't your church group.

These books are written for an adult audience, but I don't remember any content that would be inappropriate for teens. There's some sex and violence, but it's on par with what I've read in YA books. I can't speak to how closely the show follows the plot of the books, but I liked these quite a bit when I read them.

I enjoyed both the show and books. Books are harder hitting emotionally. Plots are quite different.

Aimed at adults. Fine for most teens.

Either way is fine. I just wouldn't go back and forth until one is done. I did TV first.

Completely agree. Wokewashing is prevalent in TV and movies.
