1. Steam deck is portable. You throw in a extreral hard drive its no longer really portable
2. Even if you plug it in, it needs to be in ex4 format (linux) for it to work
3. It'll drain the battery faster as the battery needs to power the external hard drive
In essence if it can't fit on the deck, it's not a good idea.
You can however try to do a NAS setup. But that in itself can be very very expensive and limited to only be used while you're home.
They weren't asking about the deck...
Wut???

I love it. I'm a grown adult, busy life, and sometimes I get bothered that no video game gave me that "spark" like when I was younger and loved them. This was the first game to give me that spark in a loooong time, like catch myself thinking about the game wanting to play lol.
Here's the thing, yes it has a big multiplayer community, but I 100% like the single player aspect, just click the local/host thing, pick a map (start on The Island probably) and spawn and good luck! There's no real story/cut scenes to it, you're just into this world and have to figure your way to survival. It's so insanely complex.
It's basically Minecraft but with dinosaurs and modern graphics. You can get so incredibly complex, you could dump in 100 hours and still have so much more to go, they did a good job making it a good progress rate but allowing you to build so much.
I honestly wish I could restart this game, totally forget all I know, and experience the first few nights of the game again. Terrifying, scrambling to figure out how to get food, make a basic shelter, avoid dinosaurs, dying 20x before you finally think you can survive a tiny bit.
Anyway, 1000000000% recommended. Play single player.
Edit: if you get to playing, learn the hotkeys like how to transfer a full stack of things to an inventory, how to transfer one with one button, just google Ark shortcut keys, makes life on the game way better.
Looks like you have some searching and reading to do. Have fun.
