If you can't ride a medium or want a little higher spec Marin 27.5" mountain bike, I also posted the Marin Palisades Trail 2 Bike at $499.99 deal and it is available in small, medium and large.

I generally would not recommend mountain bikes for riding around town. For your purpose I would look more at city, road, hybrids, or gravel bikes, depending on how good and how hilly the roads you want to bike are.The fatter tire and aggressive tread of mountain bikes as well as their suspension system means they are less efficient (need to pedal harder to maintain the same speed), and on paved roads these features don't confer any benefit.
A hard tail mountain bike like this is generally the Swiss army knife of bikes as it can do it all. If your riding will include some dirt trails in addition to streets this is a good choice. If you will just be riding pavement exclusively, I would look for more of a commuter style bike with road tires.

This bike deal caught my eye as it seems quite good spec at this sale price in 2022. This is similarly spec to a Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2. If I was looking for a hardtail 27.5" mountain bike, I would definitely consider this. I actually have the 2019 Marin Rock Springs 2 29er (Deore drivetrain/Shimano hydraulic brakes/Rockshox front suspension) and the bike is definitely top notch quality. Marin is definitely a brand that I would consider buying again from especially as I look for good bang for the buck value.

I got Shimano Acera/Altus/Alevio on either my old Marlin 26er hardtail mountain bike and my Nishiki hybrid bike and they work great. I put tons of mileage on them and they still work great.

I don't know very much about bikes; would this be good for riding around town?

Click on the dropdown where it says that Medium is for 5'6" to 5'10".

I really want this, but I'm 5'11" so I'm not sure if it's small for me.

Good deal but the geometry is less modern than the Axum.

Might be fine. Can always get a little bit longer of a stem to make the reach a little longer. Don't need anything expensive and it's a relatively easy part to replace.
