Also check manufacture date on the box before you open these. They all have 10 year max lives and will automatically deactivate at year ten (by law)

On sale because they're all old stock, half the life half the price.

And your tag is HilariousDime?
It was the username given to me and I'm too lazy to change it. What does that have to do with my question?

I wonder if you could bring them into Walmart and then do a trade in for a newer model?
Great idea!

why can't they ever lower the Battery version?!?
If you can find the hardwired versions, I'll trade you some NIB battery ones that I already have.

The walmart stock is typically the old nest units prior to when google bought them. I bought one from Walmart a few weeks ago but it had only a few years life left (not closest 10 years as it should) and it had the original nest packaging (pre-google version). One easy way to tell is if the nest logo is embossed on the middle of the unit then it is the old nest product. The google branded product does not have nest embossed.

I think there may be a gen 3 version coming soon... Searching for Google Nest Protect Gen 3 Release Date brings up an Amazon product page that says something about an October 6th release date. So this discounting may be to flush out old stock, not necessarily because they are very old stock.
It would be nice if the new ones could act as access points for their new Nest routers. These need some more distinguishing features for the regular price because they're really expensive for just a smoke alarm with notifications.

I agree they are overpriced, but adding more features to a device with a max service life of 10 years isn't a great idea. You don't want to throw away your smoke detector because you're upgrading your WiFi infrastructure, and you don't want to throw away your WiFi infrastructure because your smoke detector has reached end of life.

That's great, they show you the pics of the front and mounted… but not the most important part… The back. Anyone know what the plug looks like? Will I have to cut wires on the ceiling and attach a new plug? Who knows. Anyone got an image of the plug style? I'm intimately familiar with our current plugs as I've replaced a couple batteries in the middle of the night!

I did a little research and it's more complicated than that.

The smoke detector portion has a 10 year rated life, but any device that also has a CO detector is rated for 5-7 years.

With that in mind, it might be more affordable to get separate units and enable Nest Aware or use a third party solution to detect smoke alarms.

It's $6 a month for Nest Aware, but you can easily offset that by getting cheaper smoke/CO alarms.

If you have a Nest doorbell or cameras, you may already use Nest Aware anyway.

Was going to say, some alarm monitoring systems can "listen" for a smoke/CO alarm - probably the better long-term solution, otherwise you're spending a lot of $$ just for something with connectivity that you're going to be replacing relatively often. Also depends on the size of the home.

The battery is designed to last 7-10 years in all of the "10 year" smoke detectors. It isn't like the detector uses some sort of automagical voodoo to decommission itself exactly 10 years from the day it was manufactured.
