I'm in even worse shape because I can ONLY buy an Asus card (since I need a 2nd HDMI port and everyone but them has dropped the 2nd HDMI for this gen)
š
Purchase an active DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 or active USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter. ClubIT makes them. Bought an adapter and it works.

I need it for HD audio to an AVR.
AFAIK an active adapter converts a DP signal to an HDMI signal, but DP is not capable of formats like TrueHD and DTS-HD so you'll lose audio quality doing it this way.
In searching I found numerous folks who were never able to get stuff like HD 7.1 audio via an active DP->HDMI adapter.
In theory a PASSIVE adapter might actually be able to do this, if it's attached to a "D++" port (a passive adapter only works on a ++ port), because the port is no longer [logically] DisplayPort. In this case it becomes [logically] an HDMI port. Physically it's a DP-sized port but the adapter makes it HDMI and it tells the card to output HDMI from the port and not DP. This CAN pass full HD audio to an AVR.
Problem is- D++ was never popular, and far as I can tell nobody even bothers to label or list if their video cards support it anymore (and haven't for a couple generations).
Back in the 3090 release times I emailed several card makers to ask if they support it and got some clearly chinese is their first language support messages that were unable to offer much clarify the issue either.
So my options are gamble on a $1600 one-HDMI card having D++ support so a passive adapter gets me sound (I only need the sound, don't care about the video)
Or buy an Asus card that has 2 native HDMI.
(previously Gigabyte also had 2, and that's what my 3090 is)
If you're wondering why I need this it's because the video out is 4k/120/HDR, which the Denon X3300 AVR does not support- and replacing the AVR with one that does support it and also has all the audio features my current AVR has would be like 800-1000 bucks- and the AVR otherwise does everything I want... so much cheaper to run 2 HDMI cables, one to TV and one to AVR.
