A razor paint scraper works very well getting the burnt-on food from the glass top.
Been doing it for years and it does not scratch.

Just spray it with the cleaner of your choice. (Lysol, Clorox with Bleach, Glass cleaner, etc...and and then scrape.)
After that, just wipe...
I read your post and went and got a new Magic Eraser and tried it on my cooktop and while it works decently, I believe the cleaner in this post works much better. That said, when I want a quick and not perfect clean I will definitely use the magic eraser. Thanks for the heads up!
I do use scraper for heavily burnt on overflow situations, but is usually last resort. It does not scratch if done properly with a decent blade, but is capable of damage if not careful.
I usually start more conservative (glass top spray cleaner), to this (liquid paste), then glass scraper if needed. I have not tried Magic eraser but will give it a try next time.
I've tried many brands, and this is among the best. It is what I usually have on hand, because it can be had relatively inexpensively and they carry at TJ Maxx/Marshalls. This Amazon price is good.

I use oven cleaner on mine where stuff bakes around the burners. Only leave it on a few minutes, wipe off, then clean with damp rag.

Any recommendation for non-glass black metal stove tops?

Agreed. A razor is way better. Been doing this for years and wife always gives it a thumbs-up. Also tried this Weiman Glass Cooktop cleaner before razor and the burnt-on ring around stove will not come off.

I use Bar Keeper's Friend and a little Dawn dish soap. BKF has been mild enough to not mar/scratch, and Dawn breaks up oils and grease. Do a small test spot if you're concerned about scratching, but I've never had an issue with it in years of using this combo.

I think a benefit of the cooktop cleaner is that it (supposedly) leaves a thin protective layer that helps keep stuff from binding as much to the glass.
