I thought gift cards were universally exempt from state sales tax...as the sales tax would be captured when the gift card was actually redeemed for a purchase of a service or item??

In your scenario, are you taxed TWICE for purchases using gift cards??

What state are you in??

The target deal is buy one get one 10% off. Essentially making it 5% off your entire purchase. You'll get an additional 5% off the discounted amount, making the overall discount 9.75%. This Kroger deal should be better (unless you're being charged tax)

Example Cart:
  • Added (2) $100 Cricket gift cards to cart: $200
  • Promo 1: Buy 1 get 1 10% off prepaid airtime cards: -$10
  • Promo 2: RedCard 5% Discount: -$9.50
  • Total Discounts: $19.50
  • Overall Total: $180.50
  • Overall Discount Percentage: $19.50 / $200 = 9.75%

Despite the title of this post (and what Kroger is calling them), these aren't really gift cards, they're refill cards. Generally when you add refills to a prepaid phone line, the full amount gets applied to your account, with no additional taxes or fees.

  • Tried buying $200 eGift card with cc1: We apologize, but your order has been declined.
  • Tried buying $200 eGift card with cc2: Success
  • Tried buying $150 eGift card with cc2: We apologize, but your order has been declined.
  • Going to try $150 again with cc3

Maybe there's also a limit based on credit card number?

Yes you buy it online they send you a virtual card a little while later. Sometimes it takes a few hours. It's not really sold by Kroger, it comes up as Blackhawk Inc.
