I purchased the version of this without the instaview feature and craft ice from Home Depot early this year for about $1400 so this is a good price, especially with Costco benefits.

For those who do buy, be sure to set the freezer temperature to -2 degrees or lower. Had mine at +4 thinking it was well below 32 so must be ok. Complained to refrigerator repair guy about low ice production and slushy ice cream. He said that moving just those few degrees makes a big difference. So I did and in less than 24 hours, the ice cream was solidly frozen as it should be. I haven't checked the volume of ice production since changing the settings but be aware that these types of refrigerators have nowhere near the capacity of good old Whirlpool fridges of the past. On a hot summer day, you will likely run out of ice like we did. As a result, I bought a used countertop ice maker to supplement the fridge. LG has a setting that allows the user to increase the amount of ice made but it only lasts 24 hours and then it reverts back. Therefore if you want more ice, you have to activate this every day. So much for smart engineering.

Also, my wife dropped something on the glass top of the lowest shelf in the freezer and the glass EXPLODED into a gazillion small pieces. The force was so strong the glass actually penetrated a Rubbermaid food container. Both of us had bloody hands during the cleanup. I was and remain shocked that such glass was not laminated for safety purposes. We cleaned the freezer for at least an hour and the floor around the refrigerator for three days still finding chards all over the place. Thank goodness this didn't happen when our grandkids were around with bare feet.
Repeating my story from another LG deal thread…

I feel it's my duty to report my experience with LG. Amazingly terrible warranty service. I firmly believe they intentionally make things difficult so that folks will just give up.
My fridge stopped working in June. I called and requested it fixed. It was still covered by warranty.
They put an order in.
A week later I called and was told I have to wait a few more days. I call again and am told the order has to be re-entered. Wait for a call or call again in 9 days.
I call again still nothing. I go online and find out the LG repairman network is woefully inadequate and getting someone to fix your appliance under warranty is very difficult or improbable.
They say they'll replace or give me a return. I say replace they say No only a return. I say fine. They offer 1/3 the original price. I have no options. Ok I'll take your pittance.
I need to fill out paperwork. Ok I do it. I
I hear nothing for a couple weeks.
I call. Somebody did something wrong I need to resubmit. They email but don't respond to your emails. They text but don't respond to your texts. You call and ask to speak to a manager and you're on hold for hours and then they tell you a manager is gonna call you back. They never do.
I hate this company with a passion I didn't know I was capable of.
It's been 5 months. They never repaired the fridge that was under warranty. They offered me a ~30% refund. I've called/text/emailed must be 25-35 times. Spent hours on the phone. I still have no check.
If I listened to all my friends recommendations on what not to buy, I wouldn't own a refrigerator

Lg is known to be horrible reliability wise but please look into how incredibly terrible their customer service is before purchasing (endless examples available in Reddit, etc). Even with the Costco warranty, it is not worth it.

What do you find to be worth it? This is a statement I read on all brands.

I think all fridges are shit now. I have a 5 year old $3000 Maytag french door bottom freezer drawer fridge that I have to manually defrost every 3 months or the fan freezes over. The repair guy replaced the defroster parts 3 times and said this is just the way refrigerators are now. You should have less issues with side by sides like this one.

I've had three failure events on my LG fridge, all right after it's 2year mark. I was part of their class action suit and also had several techs visit to try and fix. They all said the same thing, don't go with Samsung or LG for fridges.

Did lowering the temp help the shape of the craft ice by any chance? Mine comes out fairly well, but flat on both sides instead of "perfectly" round. No big deal, just curious about others experience.

I see the same on all brands being terrible now. My experience was just further soured by how terrible LG's customer service was. Customer service may also be an issue across other brands as well but personally, I've never dealt with a company that tried so hard to get out of honoring a warranty claim. There are endless examples of LG doing the same to others.

Um....my washer and dryer are LG and have been going strong for over 10 yrs. Which replaced LG which were over 10 yrs old that were replaced just to upgrade.

That said, refrigerators are notoriously problematic. No matter the brand. A lot of the problems are with ice makers. That's why we bought a basic Hisense fridge, that has been problem free for 3 yrs. Our cheap Kenmore refurb fridge has over 10 years in the laundry room and it's still going strong.

....so it's not the brand. It's design and features that is the problem. It can also be user environment like dirty electricity that causes poor life.

2 cents here- my LG like this one lasted nearly 2 years before failing without warning. The tech was unable to repair after multiple trips over a month and we received a pro-rated refund which allowed a purchase of a cheaper frigidaire.

Agreed and it sucks that there is no one reliable brand for something as essential and difficult to replace as a refrigerator even if you pay a premium. But again, I was more put off by how terrible their customer service was. I know that can also be hit or miss depending on the individual you happen to connect with when you call in but I was dealing with multiple people in multiple departments over a year. And this is probably also an issue with other manufacturers as well but all you can do as a consumer is decide with your wallet by not giving them further business once you've been personally impacted by one. Like many others though, I also try to post on LG threads whenever I happen to come across them just as a warning.
