Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.
Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

My brother has movies that just came out in the theaters on his. Not sure if he has a server with them or what, but it's that normal to have movies that are in the theaters on it?

I mean it's normal in the sense that it's normal to walk into a gas station with a pistol and walk out with a bunch of cash.
I'm not condemning or condoning it - but come on, use your head. Assuming you aren't talking about pay per view, What do you think?

Plex is great, use it daily. I've never found a use for any of the features offered with plex pass though.
I did pay for their android app, that was just s small one time fee.

There are annoyances. Like the roku app supports playing TV series extras but the Android TV one doesnt. A few months/years back, they started focusing more on their streaming service over local libraries making it a little harder to navigate.

I don't really trust Plex's security as it isn't 100% clear to me exactly what they are doing so I'm not willing to direclty expose my server to the internet. Instead I'm tunneling through my own vpn. When doing this, the connection is spotty. Streaming videos might work fine then suddenly stop. Playing the same videos directly from a file share over the same vpn connection works fine.

As noted, I added a TV tuner card to my setup. Essentially, I insert a cable card (that Comcast has authenticated with my programming package) into an HDHomeRun Prime. The device is connected to a coaxial jack, the device grabs the cable signal/channel that I select and digitizes it to my network. My Plex servers can latch on to that, layer on an EPG (electronic programming guide based on zip code and provider). So I can watch "TV" on any nearly any device in my house (Playstation/phone/tablet/smart TV/NVidia Shield) without the need for a cable box... and I can also watch it outside of the home.

EPG that is included with Plex Pass screenshot/example [snipboard.io].
Im one of the dinosaurs still using an HDHR Prime with my cable (Fios) sub. Can you tell me more about how I can watch programming outside of my LAN, like on my phone while outside the home? I used to use my XB360 with MCE in windows 7, but those days are long gone..

I might be an idiot, but I downloaded the free version and I couldn't figure out how the heck to use it... Would purchasing the paid version make it much better or am I missing the idea?

What's a cost effective way to host the plex server with reasonable performance? Planning to host just videos with storage less than 500GB with 2 concurrent users max. I currently use an old windows laptop but I think it's draining too much power to be up and running 24x7 and not reliable. Appreciate any suggestions. TIA

Purchased one from Colombia. Went through a lot of countries looking for a better price but that was the best one that wouldn't verify the CC country. Turkey comes in at $30 but validated country.

Been debating this each of the past few years and finally pulled the trigger. Does anyone use this with a fire TV stick? Can you actually record live TV to your Plex server? Any good guides would be great. Now to find a good deal on storage

I've own Plex since 2012, and have yet to figure out how to make use of it since these streaming services came along.
