Glad to see sound blaster is still around. Since the on board audio chips on motherboards have almost made it where you don't need a audio card any more unless your mother ord audio fails.

How can this improve the sound on your PC if your PC provides the source signal. Does this bypass the sound chip on your motherboard. I always thought that sound can only be as good as the weakest link in the sound reproduction chain. So if you have a cheap preamp the best amp or speakers can only reproduce the crappy signal they receive

I use headphones that my motherboard cannot power and have a sound blaster. It works well for me but unless you have headphones that can benefit from extra power then you would not need this.

And yes, to answer your question it does not utilize the motherboard audio. It has its own software as well.

So I currently use my 3080 TI's HDMI port to a Yamaha receiver (5.1 setup) for sound. My biggest issue is it is technically seen as another monitor and I can drag my mouse off screen. Would this be a good solution and would I lose any quality?

It's only as good as the source audio so your audio will need to have decent but rate and depth for it to work. The DAC replaces the sound card and will take the signal via USB instead of a RCA or 3.5mm line jack and will convert it to a sine wave for the output device. The output devices can only interpret and play audio to an analog sine wave. A good DAC is anything that can take a 24 bit and a 44.1kHz sample rate. I believe the streaming sources like Tidal, Apple Music, and Amazon HD output at CD quality streams. However, you will need decent open back headphones or a a half decent hifi stack to hear the difference. Don't expect to hear a difference with some $30 gaming headphones. However you also don't need a $50k McIntosh tube stack to hear a difference as there are major diminishing returns in the hifi audiophile world and most companies in that realm sell snake oil but the price isn't bad for a DAC/amp combo.

No it replaces your computers on board sound card. You will still need a speaker.

I have the X3 version of this one. I connect my old 5.1 analog system to this. What I love about it is I then connect the X3 to my KVM and it allows me to share my speakers with my work laptop and my gaming pc.
