I'll say it again in this thread, all of these Horizon Hobby sales are also available in store at your local hobby store- that's a dealer for HH. If you have one near consider supporting them versus buying online. They can be very helpful and will probably have spare parts in stock, some even will have tracks to play on.
Something that I think most will want to understand when getting into a "hobby grade" is that these things do break. This unit has two weak points, either to protect the more important parts or just because. By design or design flaw, depending on your perspective really.

Most kids I have let run this thing have the inclination to just floor it, when it is stuck on a stick or in some jam and the kid keeps flooring it these parts will strip. This is all part of owning a hobby grade RC. It's not hard and is part of the fun.

The two parts on this that will break are easy to fix and replace:
1) Arrma Voltage Differential Outdrive
2) Arrma AR310764 Spur Gear

Batteries - The stock battery is a NiHM and will be the safest bet for longevity of the above parts. Getting a LiPo 2s battery will make this thing repond and move faster, you just need to move a jumper next to the on/off switch. The stock battery lasts around 10 to 15 minutes and takes a long long time to recharge with the included charger. I'd recommend seeing how you like the truck and how it performs. Grabbing an extra NiHM battery so one can charge while one is in the truck may be a happy medium to get things started. Again when you go LiPO things will wear out on this truck faster but... it is all around quicker as well.
Not like the $60 2 years ago but still a deal. For a real rc car this thing rocks for a beginner level for the kids.

I'm debating to get some for my boys. Is the 2WD a problem?

It's 1WD since open diff. Definitely runs into issue. I own one from the $60 deal

Do you recommend it or not? Any 4WD RC in the $100 I should look into?

Lots of off brand 4wd on Amazon. RGT, Laegendary, and deeRC aren't too bad but if something breaks, it's going to be hard to fix.

It all depends on how they plan on using it. Snow/taller grass etc forget it. Packed dirt is ok. Sand is not. Paved surfaces are great.

Nice starter basher. Great on smooth surfaces and dirt. Grass is not recommended.

Great truck. Not the stupid good deal of 2 years back but still a very good RC car. 2WD is fine for a starter car. Mechanically easier and still does well on grass and gravel. No, open diffs are not 1WD. Both wheels are pushing. I would suggest getting a second battery. The one that confess with the truck will run out before you are done having fun. Still, nothing is needed right out of the box.
