Objectively? Yes. For most folks? No. Lemme 'splain...

Cold Steel makes pretty darn good knives. Built well, good grinds and at this price the Bowie Spike is a good buy. But what use is a knife like this? Obviously it's designed to be a weapon, which IMHO is a terrible reason to carry a knife unless you are intending to go to war. Hear me out...

I often (legally) carry a concealed firearm for self-defense, so I'm not anti-weapon or anti self-defense at all. I also carry a folding knife as a tool daily. It's just that there are so many better tools for self-defense than a knife. If attacked your job is to survive the attack, to escape and to live. Using a knife in a fight requires that you close with your attack to use it, rather than working to create distance between you and your attacker. Pepper spray, a cane or a simple stick will let you defend yourself from an attack while maintaining and increasing distance to escape the threat.

A knife is a great "get off me" defensive tool once you are grappled, but an ounce of attention to your surroundings, situational awareness and avoiding arguments or other silly situations that can lead to a fight are a much better tools to have in your arsenal than a knife is. And the idea that carrying a knife will scare off potential attackers is silly, at best. As is carrying a knife "just in case" when you don't have the training to properly use it.

Now I'll get off my soapbox and apologize for my rant to say this is a pretty good deal, on a well built knife that gets good reviews. The fact that it has a drop point style blade means it will work better as a non-combat cutting tool than a dagger style blade will. And this is the lowest price on Amazon for this knife according to the humpty-hump-hump since it started tracking it in 2019. Thumbs up.

Never saw 4116 steel before, I understand it's a bigger blade but how much do knives with that steel usually cost? It's considered a low end steel, food grade?

1.4116, also known as 4116, is a low-end stainless steel made by ThyssenKrupp, a German company. It's an inexpensive steel popular for kitchen knives. My understanding is Krupp has a factory in China pumping out this steel, so likely not made in Germany. Knife itself is made in Taiwan, but not sure if that is where the steel is also made.

4116 is a tough steel, but not extremely hard. Hard use knives like this one are often made out of steel that isn't exceptionally hard, so that they aren't brittle and prone to breaking or chipping. 4116 is also pretty corrosion resistant, hence why it's a good budget kitchen knife steel.

A knife like the Spike isn't intended to super hard and hold an edge forever, but to be tough enough to withstand punching holes in things. I still wouldn't throw this knife or do stupid things like try to baton it through wood. In the budget knife world I would consider this a decent steel for this type of knife, especially since it's not really designed to be an EDC work knife. And Cold Steel builds (overbuilds?) a pretty tough knife.

Nothing makes any knife steel "food grade" other than keeping it clean, and if oiled then done so with a food grade oil, or clean the oil off before you use it on food.

In the end, this is a $20 budget sticker made from a perfectly good budget steel, made by a company with a reputation for making very solid knives.

Any weapon is better than no weapon in a self defense situation, but as I understand it, knives built like this will probably mean you cut your own fingers pretty deeply if used in a stabbing motion if the knife hits bone, and then your fingers slide down the blade due to no finger guard.

So this isn't a good knife to attack with? I'm looking for a good knife at this price to attack with. oh and to wear as a necklace.
