The Frontier gate agents are strictly enforcing personal size at the gate. All personal items must fit in the metal bin at the gate without any pressure or force. These agents are a hired by a third party company and receive commission for each bag charged at the gate.

Personal item dimensions are 14 x 18 x 8. If your personal item does not fit without force they will charge you $100 for a "carry on" at the gate (each direction). Pro tip: you can purchase the carry on on the frontier website for $60 instead, as long as you can make the purchase before the door closes. The gate agents don't like this because they lose their commission. Be careful this holiday season.

I canceled my discount den and unsubscribed from their mailing list. We were in Cancun and all their bag sticker kiosks were broken (with photos of the errors) so we had to get in line with everyone else. They charged us $25/pp to put a sticker on our bags even though they knew the kiosks were broken. Tried to get a refund via their online chat and they said they can't do it. I honestly believe that Frontier is will be going out of business within the next few years. Note: The 75$ wouldn't have been such a straw that broke the camels back if the flights weren't over $1500 for a family of 3.

Is regular backpack consider personal item?
In the past, it has been a personal item. However, currently, overstuffed backpacks may be charged as a carry-on.

This is exact reason I always spend the extra money for a legit airline. Frontier seems cheaper up front, but miss something by an inch or oz and it ends up costing more.

Totally agree

That sucks. The people at the counter should've known this and agreed to waive it - or at least the customer care later when you showed the pictures. Sounds like an unethical business practice. I'd consider filing complaints with FAA, BBB or charge back on credit card. It's not about the money, it's the principle.

You have to be the luckiest person in America, everyone that I know that has flown frontier airlines including me has been stuck somewhere because of plane or pilot issues. And now they are saying all customer care is automated.😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I was actually very lucky last year on frontier! Only 2-3 delays and no cancellations. I probably flew 60 segments this year, and only had to deal with 2 cancellations, and about 15 delays (could be pilot shortage, FA shortage, weather - maybe?! Wink ) Southwest was my worst this year, but everything was good until about august and then it started getting bad. For reference this year I've flown AA, Alaska, Delta, Frontier, Jetblue, Southwest, United.

I flew Frontier once - the plane looked like it came from a boneyard, the attendants from Denny's, and the pilot from a nut house. Oh and they charged us $120 for carry-ons at the gate. Shame to hear they still exist

so this is how they make profits: lure customers in with low airfares, and charge $100 for each over-sized carry-on?

I even submitted the photos with the complaint that I filled out on their website. They said that because the gate agent didn't note our complaint about having to pay that they can't issue a refund.

OP must be smoking crack. As a former airline employee, I can 100% tell you that the gate agents don't make commission from carry-on bag fee sales. Quite honestly, most of them would rather let you go with your bag than face confrontation. The only reason they're becoming confrontational is because their supervisor/managers/GMs are nearby watching ensuring that employees are following corp policy. Especially during the holiday season, managers are under higher pressure from HQ to meet or exceed station revenue goals, or risk getting funding reduced the following year. This is how stations lose/gain routes and eventually get shut down if HQ deems them unprofitable. Days of commission in the airline industry are long gone. What airline would willingly give a cut of it's profits to third party contractors? That's another thing, most airline employees don't even work for the airline they're representing, they're third party contractors meaning they do all the work with no benefits at all.

Confirmed via the FRONTIER gate attendant today that Frontier gate staff are working for another company and do make a commission for each bag. Why else would they put up with multiple angry customers yelling at them for each boarding?
