Deal Details
The Frontier gate agents are strictly enforcing personal size at the gate. All personal items must fit in the metal bin at the gate without any pressure or force. These agents are a hired by a third party company and receive commission for each bag charged at the gate.
Personal item dimensions are 14 x 18 x 8. If your personal item does not fit without force they will charge you $100 for a "carry on" at the gate (each direction). Pro tip: you can purchase the carry on on the frontier website for $60 instead, as long as you can make the purchase before the door closes. The gate agents don't like this because they lose their commission. Be careful this holiday season.

You are right, they are working for another company, depending on where you're located they're probably employed by either dnata, ATS, WFS, Menzies, etc. Second, why would they tell you they're making commission off of your misery. I assure you they're not making commission, but rather they were promised something, probably a pizza party. Also if you opened your eyes, you might notice someone in a suit standing not far from the gate agents watching everything. I used to work for Spirit airlines, or rather Swissport, doing this exact same thing.
Very true
Also the FAA guidelines they get fined if caught . And they are under cover secret shopped all the time
I'm afraid Gamer765 is the crack smoker. I can confirm what OP and Reddit claims. The gate agents for frontier are now frequently contractors that do get a commission on bag fees charged at the gate. The incentives are aligned in such a way that the gate agents are making up rules like "you have to just set it down and let it slide in by itself" all the while your straps on your backpack get caught in the open slots on the sides. They won't let you dislodge the straps from the slots and tell you that you're forcing the bag in… they'll tell you that you'll miss your flight if you don't just pay. Not to mention this has really increased boarding time and decreased overall morale on flights. You'll find these rules are absent from frontiers' terms because other than the dimensions all the other little gimmicks are the gate agents trying to get a commission. This is a terrible customer experience and I hope Frontier wises up. I'm all for charging people who really go over the limit but there is no excuse to be predatory and unreasonable.

And you can't squash the bag in the sizer? That's nuts too. If you can squash it into the sizer, you can squash it into the place on the plane it belongs.
There have to be better ways to monetize their services without alienating so many people with nonsense.
It's just not worth it to save a few bucks flying frontier. Everything about frontier airline sucks
Worried that these overzealous gate agents will try to charge for it. It fits in the sizer, but not easily, and I think the handle sticks out the side of the sizer. Of course the sizers are literally designed with the cutout on the side so the handle can stick out.
