E ink is way different. It's like reading paper.
I have a 2021 Paperwhite and the Kobo Libra 2. Both are great, but I think Kobo is a little better. Kobo accepts more file types, but it's a little more finicky with certain things. Just depends on what your needs are, your preferred market (Amazon vs Kindle), whether you like customization, etc.
Reading on a phone or tablet screen is unpleasant for many, battery life is days vs hours, they're a bit more simplistic in both style and function, and they won't slow to a crawl in 2 years like android tablets.

Have any of the other kobos been on sale anytime in the last year? I'd like to get one of the upscale models but never see them on sale.
They do occasionally. I've been between this and the Libra 2. I would sign up for their text alerts on their site.

I think I'll pull the trigger on this. Had a kindle for a long time and it was fine. Im just not interested in supporting them anymore. Supporting more formats out of the box saves the extra steps of converting too. Really was interested in the Libra 2 for the physical buttons but I think the smaller form factor will be nicer for bringing to the beach or just varying with me.

I had the Kobo Clara HD for a while and really liked it. The backlight color temp is what sold me. I prefer a warm glow when reading, reminds me of reading books from 20-30 years I picked up used with aged pages.

The new one here is a nice upgrade and I bought it for my wife. She was kind of skeptical at first since we had both owned nook touch devices that were fine but she really likes hers as well. No complaints - I buy ebooks that support epub and various other formats as opposed to kindle. Just personal preference.

A couple of big differences between this and the Paperwhite are screen size (PPW is bigger) and treatment of library books (Kobo has Overdrive on it, with PPW you must send the book to PPW through Libby on your phone). You can now send epub format books to PPW so that difference is gone. Both have browsers, I like Kobo's better. As a prior poster noted, PPW kids edition was below this price BF-a couple of settings changes turns it into an adult PPW, and comes with a cover.

The Kindles still don't have native support for EPUB files. You can send them to Kindle via "send to Kindle", but it converts the file into a format the Kindle can read. This conversion usually works, but you do run the risk of some formatting getting broken. It might be worth looking into converting with Calibre instead for more consistent results. It also might be worth looking into a Kobo if you're a huge reader of EPUB files because they support EPUBs out of the box, without conversion.

This looks like a solid deal but when are they gonna come to their senses and make a phone-sized e-reader again? I've been waiting YEARS for a Kobo Mini 2!

Samsung S22 Ultra
111sqcm vs 114sqcm, you are right S22 has a 3% bigger screen.

Maybe in terms of the diagonal measure of the screen, but this has a much larger bezel. Even a huge phone like a Galaxy S22 Ultra is 6.4" x 3", while this is 6.3" x 4.4"...not a comfortable fit in a pocket, which is what I really want!

Good point. My epubs have converted fine since Amazon introduced this feature, but you are right Calibre gives more options (and it is what I used to use for this).

Send to Kindle also works with web pages, there are a couple of Chrome extensions for that. Great for long form articles.

Yeah, I was in bed laying on my back reading the screen and dropped it on my face. It let me know in no uncertain terms how big and heavy it is.

The points made about e-ink and aspect ratio are true but I just wanted to give people a heads up.

I own a Kindle Paperwhite 2018. It is 6 inches I believe. So I have compared it to the Samsung S22 Ultra. It all comes down to personal preference. I was disappointed with the paperwhite's handling of some documents, but the e-ink screen and low power usage is nice.

That would've been a different model. The Clara 2E HD released in 2022, only a few months ago.
