If you will be fishing with friends close to your home find a local sports / outdoors store head in there or call and ask questions about local species and seasons etc. If you're like any of the other angler's Ive met, they love talking shop. They should be able to educate on you what is available in your local waters which would then lead you to the next question of what equipment would you suggest I use. You can purchase from there or online. SD has a small bit decent amount of posts for fishing deals and combos. Check recent history. You'll find plenty of stuff to get you started quick and cheap. Flea markets are great for finding older unwanted stuff for super cheap. You can honestly get started most US species of fish with a medium to a medium heavy spinning rod with 12lb monofilament or fluerocarbon. A spinning reel that's 5.4:1 or faster ratio. And then you can buy a Lazer brand starter kit.
I would then suggest checking out YouTube for angler videos. You can learn so much in very little time and catch the buddies by surprise.
Some good channels are tactical bassin, deebos fishing, tylersreelfishing, bassfishinghq, Mike iaconelli, Kevin vandam, blacktiph... essentially there are tons. But the ones I named really break down how to read weather patterns, how to decipher target areas, how to implement each technique depending on the conditions, bait types, hardware/equipment.
It's really a wealth of knowledge. And if you're not careful you'll end up with a ton of stuff quickly much like every other angler. It's nearly a sickness 😅
