Good specs, decent deal.

For anyone purchasing this, the 8940 was plagued with issues, which for me resulted in the mobo going bad just out of warranty. PSU didn't go bad surprisingly, but it's still non-standard and underpowered, but that didn't cause the mobo to take a crap.

Not trying to be a party pooper, just fair warning on the 8900 lines. The prior gen was a known ticking timebomb at the 1 year mark. I wouldn't be saying this if a quick search showed others experiencing the same problems.
I got the black friday deal for $850 (and ultimately returned it). Here is a data dump of random facts to try ot be helpful to otehrs:
- Mobo is Z690-based
- Mine had USB issues, all ports front+rear would die or peripherals would stutter (yes I did drivers, BIOS, etc.)
- CPU could only reach ~85% of standard 12700 benchmark per Cinebench R23, due to thermals
- Vetroo V5 is a good replacement CPU cooler, or you can try the Dell "premium" (tower style) CPU cooler for ~$80 on eBay. Those come standard on the K-model CPUs for 8950
I wish the App's push notifications for deal alerts didn't come an hour after the deal went up

No known negatives to CPU cooler upgrade. Many of us got the Vetroo V5. Cools much better (-25C in some scenarios), quieter than stock, significantly quieter under load, does not cause any error messages. My only gripe is Vetroo quality/QC is iffy, but they seem to work totally fine.

There are some Youtube tutorials, some were posted in this thread, or search terms like 8950 vetroo or 8940 vetroo.
Thanks again.

I have gotten this message multiple times:

RECOVERY

It looks like Windows didn't load correctly.

I use the PC, step away for a few minutes, and then find that message. Upon opening a browser, it gives me an option to 'RESTORE' pages since it closed abruptly.

When I called Costco Concierge they didn't know what to do so they transferred me to Dell. Someone updated the BIOS and worked ok for a few days until today.
This really sucks and I wasn't expecting this to happen.
Any advice you guys can give me I'd certainly appreciate it. Had not thought of returning this XPS but if this continues then...Mad
I have this happened several times. Not sure why it happens. It is a nuisance but so far the machine recovers easily. Most programs restore properly.

I didn't want to deal with the error and PC restarting each time.
Dell eventually sent technician to replace the 500 GB solid state drive and replacement contained everything new.
Since then I have not gotten that screen anymore...keeping fingers crossed.
I would highly recommend to contact Dell and provide screenshots of the error. Following up is crucial with Dell.
Good Luck.

Did yours have the occasional clicking sound? I more concern about that then the unexpected reboot. Was curious if the technician dealt with that.

Did yours ever crash while you while using it or when the machine was idle?

I don't think I had clicking sounds. Are you referring to the sound it makes when it goes to sleep? Due to energy saving settings, this PC goes idle after a few minutes of no use even if you set it yourself to do it after 3 hours or so.

No, it didn't crash while using, it always happened when I stepped away for say 5 minutes ☹️.

The clicking noise is ongoing, but random. Most noticeable when one shuts down the computer. I thought it is the power supply relay. But since it happens while machine is on, not sure.

My few crashes so far is also when I am away from the keyboard. I turn on length of time before screen goes dark. See if that minimizes the crashes. Thanks for the response.

My second unit worked out fine after I tested it a couple weeks, so I returned the defective one I bought originally that kept shutting itself down to my local Costco today. That was quite the experience. The return guy had one of the Major Sales red vest guys come over. I figured they were just checking serial numbers but the guy grabbed a screwdriver and started prying the front panel off. After he broke the tabs on the front panel I asked what the heck he was doing. They then explained they needed to open it up to make sure no components were missing. I said I don't think that's how you get into it. They ignored me and then an assistant manager came over too and pulled out some more tools from under the counter. At that point 3 guys are prying and bending the crap out of both side panels and the rear panel. Amazing. They finally just looked through the vent holes and decided it looked OK after totally destroying the case. Unreal.

Not surprised! he was probably planning to cannibalize the system himself later!

I doubt that. None of them even knew enough to loosen the 1 flat head screw on the rear lock to release the left side panel.
