I was in Tokyo and Osaka in October. I can't wait to go back…planning Hokkaido and Hiroshima in 2023.
it's not the new standard. AA and Delta are ripping people off. United still have 2 free checked bag for an international flight.
True, but 1 bag and 1 meal is better than no bags and no meal if you're paying about the same for your flight. Also this deal flies into HND which is a little more convenient than Zipair which flies into NRT.

The nickel and diming going on with all carriers is getting a bit ridiculous though. Time to invest in the companies that ship your luggage for you separate from the airlines.

Yeah we could have four including my husband's, BUT that's a lot of luggage and kids to wrangle for just my husband and I. Usually we all have our carry ons and I check a large suitcase. The kids have carryons they can ride which helps. But it's still good to have free hands when we're running through airports.
I have taken 3 small kids to Japan by myself to visit my family many times. We probably checked in 1 or 2 bags for 4 of us (not each person) plus a stroller (for gate check-in). But I made sure to have a lot of time between flights because I didn't know if one hour was enough to change flights. I am sure you can manage. I always brought many books and magazines back to US. Ship packages full of souvenirs back home if you need.

Goodness how bad things have gotten that 577 for a garbage basic economy ticket on a terrible US airline is considered deal worthy.

This is a good price, but I prefer JAL or ANA over US airlines. I hope price will continue to drop back as they ramp up capacity (# of flights offer).
Jal and ana are so much better than any american airline its not even funny.

And be careful not to book an american flight "ticketed by jal" or united "ticketed by ana".

Also i've never flown zipair but my gut says ana and jal is better than zipair. Even tho yes i know zipair is owned by one of them but i'm pretty certain it's not the same.

I have some delta ecredit to use but unable to apply it online on delta website. Anybody tried? Do I have to call them and wait for hours to do it!?
Given how terrible delta customer service is, yes probably so

What service do you use to ship luggage back home? Shipping price from Japan to US are outrageous these days!

I flew Singapore Airlines in 2020 at the start of the pandemic (was in Yokohama and saw the cruise ship that kicked off the party)

Singapore Airlines was the best airline experience ever. Would highly recommend if that is available
I love Singapore airlines. Basically, Singapore and ana are my two favorite airlines. Jal a close 3rd. I flew emirates a number of years ago. They were not bad at all. They are my 4th.

All US airlines are the very bottom of my list lol.

I used post office to send packages from Japan to US, but that was long time ago when they had SAL shipping option (which used airplane to US then groud shipping in US). I don't believe they have SAL shipping anymore. Other times, I believe I used sea mail (?) that uses cargo ship between countries but that took 1-3 months to arrive.

It may be better idea to go ahead and pay $100 fee (?) for 2nd bag/box for check-in on your retun flight to US. My family always complain they don't want to ship packages to us because it costs $100+ when inside stuff doesn't cost that much.

I am taking 3 kids (who are 2 teenagers and one young adult) to Japan this year. I am thinking each person can take carry-on plus backpack/purse and take 1 or 2 bags (for goodies from Japan) for check-in as a group.

SAL still exists, alongside purely Surface mail (what you refer to sea mail).

This is strange. When my family was sending me a package from Japan 2 or 3 months ago, they looked but couldn't ship with SAL. As I recall, post office told them they don't offer SAL as option or maybe, when my family was making shipping label online, there was no SAL options. I can't remember which. (They used internet to make shipping label because post office told them the US custom requires info to be submitted online.)

Go buy direct from the airlines and stay the f away from expedia.
You've been warned
I booked through expedia and the airline cancelled my flight. Expedia customer service reps do nothing but stall. It would be better if they didn't exist as it gives you false hope.

I spent hours and hours trying to get Expedia to change my flight calling back multiple times. Eventually I was able to make the flight change by calling the airline directly the 3rd time. The first two reps told me I had to talk to Expedia.

Cancellations happen way too often these days to make Expedia worth it.

ANA was amazing for me. Highly recommend! I believe I got my ANA roundtrip ticket for $450 in 2019. Pretty stellar deal that was.

Delta on the otherhand has been as god awful as their reputation, granted those were for domestic, but i cant imagine they're on the same level as ANA for international.

Just got back from Japan.

If y out have a iPhone, once you are on their Japan cell network,

Buy transit pass ( suica or Passmo) on your iPhone. Reloading is easier and it makes taking bus and subway 10x better because the fare is calculated automatically.

Also reloading is easier.

I got Passmo Amex worked.

'A whole other culture', wow. Bec that's not possible in most places. Apologies, I didn't know this was your first trip to Japan. Well, that's a great thing because you won't know what you're missing. Have fun!
Masks have been normal in Japan pre pandemic, post pandemic, literally all the time. They just wear it when they're sick. Weirdo.
