I bought a dust extractor from Festool Recon on Black Friday and was pretty disappointed by how beat up it was. Functioned fine but looked very used

Yeah I've seen nothing but bad things said about the reconditioned festool products.

Not really comparable saws. The dust extraction and tear out prevention is just much better on the festool.

I have bought several items from the recon site and they have only ever looking like they were used once or twice. All looked basically new.

Funny enough, I just saw one of the woodworkers I follow on social media mentioning that he bought his first Festool track saw reconditioned and it was like-new. Guessing it is a luck of the draw type of thing.

I've never used the Festool but have a Makita and have zero complaints about either of those items. As far as chip-out goes, since the tracks are compatible I don't see why the Festool would be better.

It's amazing what a simple piece of tape can do for tear out.

Makita, yes.

Kreg, NOOOOOOOOO!!!!

The Kreg has 1 good quality. It's designed for right-handed use (with left blade). This means, it's entire function, the tool stays to your right side, in your right hand.

Unfortunately, only Kreg makes the left blade.

Kreg is not a power tool company. And Kreg as a whole is not good quality. Great ideas! Poorly manufactured. And for the price of a Kreg Tracksaw and track, you can get a MUCH better Makita saw and track.

Kreg has a few tolerable flaws that can be overlooked. However, one flaw can not... the blade spindle. They are never straight. They're off in one direction or another. So when you make a cut, the cut itself will not be 90°. It can be anywhere from 88° to 92°. It also makes the saw have a bit more vibration, and it leads to kerf thickness inaccuracies (if you have say a 1.8mm kerf on your blade, the cut kerf now becomes larger as the blade will not be flush, and a very slight wobble.)

I'm assuming it's the reason they made one more good aspect, a riving knife, on their track saws (I wish Makita would do this).

All in all, Festool used to be good. Now they're just milking their name (see Domino Mortiser). Don't get me wrong, their tools are nice (better in Europe) but far from the quality they once were, and definitely not worth the price.

Unfortunately, Festool thinks they are perfect and refuses to question or acknowledge anything other than that.

With that said, I'm going to get thumbed down into Oblivion (everything I post here gets wrecked), so take what I say how you will... I am a tool snob.

I've bought a total of 3 tools from them - my first one I'd swear was straight up new, but the Planex and dust extractor from a few months ago look like they'd been to a number of job sites and beat up. You roll the dice I guess for the discount
