You know, I thought the same when I got the K-Duo Plus, but I just hit the power button, start my brew, then go brush my teeth or something. By the time I'm done, the coffee is ready. You're already waiting about a min for the brew, so you're really just waiting a few extra min. It didn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

More specifically, yes the pot side requires paper or reusable basket filters. The kcup side does not, and unlike the basic Keurig the water tank does not have charcoal filter packet
