It appears Brother did a firmware update last year to prevent 3rd party cartridges from being used. I don't believe the aftermarket industry has caught up yet, so it looks like at this time no cheap refills.

If you purchase any printer that is currently working with aftermarket toner, be sure to TURN OFF updates as this has blocked the use in existing printers. SURPRISE!
You know what I meant, bud... No need to be pedantic
No automatic document feeder? So no duplex scanning?

Ok, here we go. How does this compare to the canon deal from Walmart, both in printer quality and value? I can live with refurbished.

Brother is generally regarded as a good brand, but I can't speak to this printer specifically. Wondering how it does with generic ink refills.

One thing I've heard about color printers in general though is that they use yellow ink or something to print "invisibly" on papers so that they can be traced back to the printer that printed that document. I understand why they do it, but I find the wasted ink aspect annoying - as someone who is trying to be more frugal

After my Slickdeal Dell color laser bricked because of scanner failing after a year. I ended up getting a brother duplex scanner so I'm not locked in to any particular MFC and can focus on what I want on the color laser.

The Dell was an OEM Canon and reportedly a common problem with the Dell/Canons. So I don't think I'll ever get a canon.

My Dell JUST did that! I got five years out of it so I did a lot better than others that got in on that Staples "deal."

BTW.. it was a rebadged Lexmark, not Canon. Smilie

I had not heard that Brother went the way of HP in this regard. Do you have a link where I can read about it?
