Per the setup and specifications PDF [dell.com], the LCD is 220 nits, 45% NTSC, 600:1 contrast, WVA (aka IPS), so it is a budget panel as expected but at least it is not a TN screen. Occasionally one can find 300nit panels (some Lenovo laptops) or better contrast/color, though generally those are in higher-tier laptops.

Tiger Lake-U CPUs officially support 64GB RAM and the i5-1135G7 supports DDR4-3200 speed RAM so there is a good chance this laptop will take 32GB DDR4 SO-DIMM (but I doubt anyone would want >32GB on this budget laptop). Manufacturers tend not to confirm RAM sizes that they do not sell as a configuration/option (need thorough certification with various brands, etc). At least it has two SO-DIMM slots, whereas many other brands (Acer, Asus, Lenovo) love to solder one channel on the mainboard.

As others have found out, the empty 2.5" bay has caddy and cables included to mount a 7mm HDD or SSD.

USB-C is a strange omission, and Dell explicitly states the HDMI port outputs 1080p60 max, no 2K/4K.
I wasn't expecting Macbook Air build quality, but the case for this laptop is just OK. All plastic and the biggest issue I have is the keyboard flexes when typing.

I installed an SSD in the open drive bay, added a 16 GB ram chip, and installed Ubuntu server on the newly installed SSD so I can dual boot into Windows or Linux. Installing and running Ubuntu server has been flawless.

The Dell site specs say 16 GB max memory. I installed a Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM into the open slot and in both Windows and Ubuntu I can access all 24 GB. I would assume you could install two 16 GB for a total of 32 GB if you wanted.

You'll need to wipe the drive and reinstall windows to get it out of S mode.
My current laptops are Win 10, 8GB RAM, and NOT in S mode.
So I am wondering... Is Windows 11 so much more intensive that despite 8GB RAM a user is given S mode as the default?
Thanks

It's becoming common practice to activate the Windoze license then reinstall, using a debloat like Chris Titus's to minimize resource usage. I have a 10th generation version of this laptop and dual-boot with MX Linux. But MX Linux is multiples more efficient on resources; so I usually stay on Linux - not to mention avoiding a multitude of privacy issues Windoze brings to the fore.

They also have an open box unit for $210 near me. Tempted but I'm not sure how good the display is. The laptop I have now the display is so bad and thats my main reason for wanting to upgrade.

Hmm bought the open box for $216 total. Should be better than what I'm using currently. The alternative was to buy a laptop for like $450. Currently using a cheapo Lenovo i3 which the display on it is just awful. Hopefully this one is better.

If you have a moment, are you able to tell me if the Dell has a better display than this Lenovo https://www.bestbuy.com/site/leno...Id=6426707

That's the lenovo I have. I can't find any information other than its 1080p FHD I couldn't find further specs no idea wherer to look for the brightness levels or other info. All I know is the Lenovo really sucks.

The Intel Core i5-1135G7 Processor does not have the Intel UHD Graphics.
It comes with the 80 Execution Units of Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics.

This Iris Xe iGPU is way better than UHD iGPU. It is about as good as the AMD's VEGA 6/7/8 iGPU.

I purchased this laptop for my inlaws during the last sale. Getting out of S mode was incredibly easy, and does NOT require a reformat or wipe of anything. Literally took just a few mouse clicks, I was actually surprised at how quick and painless it was.

Misinformation. You can just literally "click" on a few things in windows to permanently get out of S mode….
