Studies(as well as my own usage every night for 7 years) show that less is more when it comes to melatonin. 300 micrograms is more than enough. 3 milligrams is way too much 10 mg is insanity.
Edit:
300-600 micrograms is more than enough for most people. With 300 being the recommended dosage for age-related sleep problems and 600 being the recommended starting dosage for diagnosed insomnia.

300μg is as much or more than the amount your body will naturally produce. If you're taking more than what your body makes you'll just start desensitizing the receptors, making it harder to fall asleep the next night that you don't take it.
If 300μg is working for you, that means your body is working as it should be.

Check out the Huberman Lab Podcast. The stuff I've learned from there has been helping my sleep a lot. There are some supplements you can take, but he recommends other things before just doing that.
