I went through 2 of them (I assumed I got a defect and reordered) and both were worse than my AX86S for range in my subjective environment @ 30FT.
Even my GT-AC2900 (sold for $90 recently during x-mas) was competitive this this model when testing all channels and even raising the the device to a higher platform in same general area.
In terms of PHY in my home, AX86S> GT-AC2900> GT-AX6000. Throughput is RNG, but the GT-AC2900 was too close to the GT-AX6000 for me to keep it.
Of course, this doesn't mean much as performance varies per environment, but the AX86S performs the best for me. May be different for others. WIFI IS RNG.
Best to test multiple units or types of designs and go from there.

For last gen AX routers, the BCM4912 will have much better performance on package processing especially for 2.5G PHY. AX86s is more budget friendly, but the 512MB ram is holding me back.
Considering that the AX86u deals are normally around $220 and AX86U Pro is $299, I think the @250 AX6000 is the current best choice with no weak points.

Theres actually no reason why AC86U cant be updated as the 4x4 + 3x3 AC Radios have thier own 800mhz A7.. It's similar to how the AX86 line works with its 4x4 Radio.. They (ASUS) just wanna EOL it more or less as AX stuff is hard to move now. (hence this model dropping from $400 > $260 in a year)
4912 isn't much stronger than 4908, but they're discontinuing the older processors due to node shift via TSMC.It's cheaper for them to produce the 4912 and streamline it into lower end designs like AX59.. which is a 6715 (mimo disabled into 3x3) + 6705 (2x2 variant of 6710) combo.
The RAM doesn't really matter since it will swap, but I understand not having a bigger pool. It concerns me too.
Many of the newer designs are all 512MB (even the TUF-AX6000), even with 4912. 1GB being regulated to "high end"
GT-AX6000 is a great router on paper, I'm just making the point that it may not perform well for everyone for subjective penetration in "x" location.
If you can wire backhaul, 2+ routers are always better regardless.
my2c.
Edit: just chatted with their bot and I'm getting a $23 gift card sent to me for the lower price. I know it's not an actual refund but shoot, I'm ok with this.
