How old are these? Is this a good deal for a computer to keep in the kitchen for recipes and surfing? What about compared to a chromebook flip? TIA

The processor came out in Q3 2016 so once Dell got it and then sold it to a person or business was Christmas 2016 at its earliest. Or it could been sold in 2017, but by 2018 they were turning over to the 8th gen from the 7th gen.

The cpu is fine for light stuff like web surfing. The only problem which is a real serious one is Windows 11 has required feature requirements plus some artificial requirements and 7th generation Intel will not get Windows 11 support but 8th generation Intel will.

Windows 10 is phased out in Oct 2025

I will note that there are official workarounds [windowscentral.com] to get Windows 11 to run on older hardware. Also, we very recently (like within the last week) had a thread on refurbed 8th gen dell laptops for not much more than this, and it may still be active. I'd advise purchasing one of those instead.

Reviews say the screens on these are somewhat poor, and that it gets too hot. Touchpad sucks.

Big upside is USB-C charging.

B-Grade is a big risk. I've bought Dell Refurbs a number of times. You always get something with blemishes or a problem. Sometimes it's something minor, and sometimes you can't believe they shipped a wrecked hunk of garbage and it goes straight back.

This is good info, but I wouldn't recommed Windows 11 on this particular set of hardware. Low power dual core (with HT so 2c/4t) is not ready for the resource hog that Win 11 is.

Just leave 10 on it.

I know its a little more expensive, but I'd recommend the 7490 for $229 (unless you're desperate for a glossy touch screen... The 7490 is only one generation newer, but has a quadcore (with HT so 4c/8t) and 16gb ram (one stick, but you can add another 16gb stick if you need more memory (recommended for dual channel). It doesn't come with Windows installed, but windows is very easy to install. License should be registered to the motherboard and is usually Windows Pro version. Unless there's some way Dell can remove their windows license... Also, supports Windows 11 out of the box (or 10 if you want).

thanks for the links, doesn't look to hard to do. makes me wonder what will happen in a couple years when a majority of the planet's pc's can't upgrade. are we talking mountains of computer junk or maybe they will come out with windows 11 classic enabled to work on anything? technically possible and avoid the tech waste land.

Or one could theoretically run the best Windows operating system Microsoft ever released - Windows 7.

Personally, if you're going to be on the internet, I'd stick with something that's still being supported with security updates.

That fact that this isn't Windows 11 compatible is a big plus. Windows 11 doesn't even have a vertical taskbar.

Yes, that was a great OS.... but Windows 10 is not bad at all. Windows 11 though.... now that's another story.
