I just received a warranty replacement from Seagate for one of these. Same label as what's show in this deal. They are completely reset and show 0 power on count and 0 hours.

I have dual NAS Synology 1 with 12 drives at 14tb and second one with 8 at 18tb.. Doeant matter to me... Very low chances of losing data

Both can handle up to two hhds crash... For....

I have too much plex stuff to back up on the cloud...
Understood, but the warranty replacement process also takes shipping/tracking effort and you don't have a spare disk in between(like 1 week in my case). 5/12 failure is far beyond normal. With the terrible experience I had in ST and great experience in WD HGST in the last few years, I would prefer WD HGST if they are around same price.

Drives die regardless of brand. It happens. Also I'm not the one that had 5 of 12 needing replacement. Only 1 of 4.

Sample size of two 14TB drives here. One failed at 30 days and sent for RMA (on my dime). These things are pretty noisy as well.

Rather pay 100 dollars more and have 5 yrs warranty through Seagate - they replaced 5 of my 12 14TB for free within the last 4 yrs
So you'd rather pay $100 more just to expect them to failed within the warranty period so you can get them replaced for free? LOL.

That's a horrible rate. Seagate is still unreliable? I used to have many Seagate drives but all of them were dead.

Can i use these drives for surveillance?
I was wondering the same. Copied this directly from the data sheet found on Seagate's site:

Best-Fit Applications:
Scalable hyperscale
applications/cloud data centers
Massive scale-out data centers
Big data applications
High-capacity density RAID storage
Mainstream enterprise external
storage arrays
Distributed file systems, including
Hadoop and Ceph
Enterprise backup and restoreโ€”
D2D, virtual tape
**Centralized surveillance**

TLDR: Yes.

I'd like some sort of USB box to put a couple of these in and attach to a PC. I don't really want to spin up a whole new device to manage (Synology or unRAID box, or whatever). Any basic USB devices that can handle high capacity drives and a reasonable transfer speed?

You're better off putting these in an eSATA enclosure if there isn't room in your case. That avoids translation between SATA and USB which makes error reporting unreliable.
