I bought this game a few years ago on a recommendation. It is weird, all over the place, and confusing. Saying that, I enjoyed it and got the Platinum trophy. I do recommend it thoroughly as it kept my attention for a long time.

One of my favorite games ever, I think if you don't understand or like existential philosophy then much of this game will be lost on you. The gameplay on its own is quite engaging.

30+ hour game if a completionist and pretty much lowest price for digital to date. I played about 10 hours and something else came up and haven't been back to so time to revisit.

Also, NieR: Automata 3C3C1D119440927 [playstation.com], the DLC pack if you already have the base game is on sale as well for $4.99.

I have the non game of the year version and the dlc what is the difference? Are the two versions patched to the same level or is there an actual difference?

The anime of this game is currently airing but the game is still better and well worth playing through. It's one of the best games of the PS4 era.

I have it and I don't understand the gushing love this game gets on the internet. It is so kooky and odd, but it just felt like a grind to me. I think I'm halfway in and just got tired of it. Yeah yeah sexy android lady and all but still.

GFR loved it too. I enjoyed this video of them playing it more than I enjoyed playing it.

I bought this game and enjoyed the gameplay generally, but found it a little simple and repetitive. I didn't really understand most of the story or the characters. The music is 10/10 all the way through.

That said, after finishing it, I watched this video [youtube.com] and it opened my eyes to the beauty of the story and characters, and what the game was telling me. I think it is required watching, but only after you've finished the game.

Does running this on PS5 improve it in any noteworthy way?

The game play part is just like all platinum games (e.g. Bayonetta), it was a giant upgrade from the first nier game (which very few played), but honestly wasn't that outstanding even at the release. The game philosophy, however, is on a different level altogether.

I'm the same. I love a good hack and slash style of game, but didn't find much enjoyment in this one. Very repetitive and confusing at times.

I also don't understand the gushing praise this game gets. I found it way too simple and downright boring. Battle system lacked complexity. Wanted to like it but there are much better games in the genre imo

I felt this way until I got to the first "ending" which was underwhelming. The 2nd and especially the third chapters/playthroughs are what ultimately got me.

Kind of like how I feel about slow Souls-like games and boring 30 minutes of cutscenes for 5 minutes of play games like Persona 5.

IMO Automata was so good I had to get a PS3 again to play Nier and Drakengard 3, then a PS2 for the first Drakengards. Nier is uneven but later on it gets pretty incredible. Original Drakengards are a mess but the stories are unpredictable and fresh with unique characters. Too bad the latest game is a tedious app.

I'm right there with you. I tried so hard to like this game, but after spending 30-45 minutes getting to the first major fight where I got creamed both times... Which also happens to be (from what I've heard) just before the first save point. I said "F* THIS" and uninstalled it. Had I liked the gameplay better, I might have kept trying, but really, I have no idea why it got so much hype and good reviews.
