I have 6 of them and 3 of them screech at all speed settings.
Running on VOC level is great if you got it to clean the air of fresh paint, a new foam mattress, or lots of farts (or dirty baby diapers). But 1) you'll need a fresh carbon filter for most of those ; and 2) fine particles are the main health issue and thing I would guess most people use these filters for – wild fires, allergens, dust, mold spores (I think). But the machine isn't able to sense any particulate level, like pm2.5 or 10.
Best case, and for bedroom use, you'd have an air monitor that shows you what the pm levels are with and without this running. You'll quickly learn what level you generally have to run the filter at to get levels to where you're comfortable - for small bedrooms the c545 at level 2 keeps pm2.5 and 10 at 0 in a ~20 year house; I'm fine with pm at 1, so I have the schedule take it down to level 1 after a couple hours to save filter life and reduce sound levels for the kids sleeping in there (CO2 is a much bigger issue in this house; something people often learn with air quality monitors).
Worst case if you don't want to get an air quality monitor and since this is a high capacity model, I'd guess you could run it at level 2 to start the night then level 1 for the next 6 or 7 or so hours (assuming this has Wifi and scheduling like the c545).

i haven't seen anything except the smaller C545 at all of my local costcos
I got one too! Maybe around 2 yrs old. Don't even run it no more because of that sound. Only my 545 have that problem

I am returning mine with the noise. My others don't have a whine.

I've had this c909 model since Sept 2022 and so far so good. I leave it on auto most of the day but my wife turns it to lvl 3/4 when I snore loud at night. I turn it on high every now and again to circulate air. Haven't heard any sort of whine or weird noise from this model.

For what it's worth, auto on the c545 —and I assume this model, too— is triggered on VOC levels, not particles in the air, which likely isn't what most people assume think or want. The 'why' of that is probably VOC sensors being cheap and and easy, and particulate sensors less so.
