Also started caring a lot more about the freshness of the beans I got since it actually made a huge difference between old beans you find in the stores most of the time and fresher from the roaster. You also need a decent espresso grinder for your beans if you want to use the single walled basket instead of the double walled. I got the Breville Smart Grinder Pro when it was on sale last year for $150 and it does a decent job, but you can spend way more money on a higher end grinder.

An alternate option is the Gaggia Classic Pro for $399. This does not have a PID control.

You will need a good grinder to pair with either this Breville or the Gaggia. The Gaggia is a fun machine with lots of mods. This will take you into a sink hole with accessory and mods but you are now stepping into a hobby area.
Alternate to the SGP you can get a hand grinder.

This is a decent entry level machine, but if you're going to do all the work of manual espresso, consider the Gaggia classic as commented on earlier.
Best bang for the buck down under is a Breville dual boiler.
Coffee grinders are equally as important. If doing single shots only, get a manual hand grinder such as the 1zpresso jx pro. For auto, consider Eureka mignon.
