With the Denon 3800H right now being $1499.00 on Amazon the time to do it? I was eyeing the 3700H Refurbished at Denon, but then I flip back to spending $1K for a Receiver that's 4 years old at this point. I might just have to buck up and do it. Talk me into it haha. I don't need anything more then the 3700H features wise. Looking to upgrade my system to a 5.1.4 Atmos system and experiment with Auro-3D.

EDIT: Just bit the bullet and bought it. With Amazon points plus some other additional plus funds I'll be spending $331 for it. Def worth it there. Birthday present for me haha.

Congrats. I was in the same boat. I had my last Denon for over 10 years so I decided to go with the newer iteration x3800. I was only on a 2.1 setup but ended up doing 5.1.4 since I needed to run wiring through the ceiling for the projector. At the time, I paid full price since there were no sales, but ended up returning it after seeing a ton of certified refurbs/open boxes for a lot less shortly after. I found a new unopened for about 1200. It looks like prices are coming down now so thats a good thing for those looking. I furnished my entire 5.1.4 speaker system with used/open box items that were mostly new but more than half the price of msrp off. My x3800 with 5.1.4 has been solid so far.

Where did you get your refurb/open boxes? Did it come with manufacturer warranty?

Mostly amazon warehouse. So they should maybe have warranty. Otherwise never had any problems with my equipment. Also accessories4less. eBay sellers usually have B-stock equipment too for a lot less. Some with shorter warranty. Depends on your risks, you can save quite a bit.

That's a really good deal, kinda jealous haha. But I want it now so oh well How do you like the Auro-3D? Great choice doing the speakers going to a 5.1.4 setup.

I haven't had time to set that up yet. Soon I hope! I might be tempted to buy Dirac whenever that comes out for it.

This seems like a great deal for a brand new 9.4 receiver with Dirac

I miss Frys Electronics so much. A few years ago I picked up a 4500 for under $700.00 (on sale for $869 - additional 20% off coupon). Those were the days!

I'd get the 3700 for a g or less if you don't need the extra features. Sounds great and runs a full atmos setup like a champ in my crib. For 500 more put that towards upgrading your center or sub and get much more bang for buck sound quality wise.

Will a 7.1.4 go any better than 5.1.4? For medium room size.

It depends on what you mean better for your bubble of sound. If you feel like you're missing surround audio directly behind, maybe probably. I've heard that the returns may be minuscule if it's not a larger dedicated theater room or if they're not properly set. 5.1.4 startles me already so i'm sure having 7 would having me watching my back the entire time. If you have the funds why not.

Personally I would wait for more reviews of thee new Sony ES receivers, especially the 5000. It has 2 more channels of amplification (no need for external amps for 7.x.4), Sony's own calibration and spatial audio. It is bit more expensive, but might be of higher quality based on past Sony ES receivers. Considering the additional amp and DIRAC license for the Denon, the Sony's price is right in line if they prove to be good, particularly Sony's own sound calibration.

I was able to get a $199.10 lower purchase price by purchasing direct thru Denon and using 2 coupons codes -- 10% off student discount via Student Beans plus $50 off Denon newsletter signup -- plus I am expecting to get another $60 back in cashbacks (credit card 2%, cashback site 2.5%). My total net cost including state sales tax should be around $1360. Denon also offers a 60 day return policy which is higher than Amazon's 30 day return policy.

Personally the X4700H is the better deal at the same price - you get more continuous watts per channel at 125. With the X3800H you can go with more subs and smaller speakers, I guess. If you ever plan on expanding with more
