Looks like a good deal if you want to go to Bali but be forewarned Bali is a tourist trap. I've been to over 60 countries and I loved the rest of Indonesia but left Bali after 3 days. It is much more like phuket Thailand than an oasis as it's sold. That is if you intend to venture off the resort. That being said if you just want to stay on a resort might as well stay in the states or go somewhere close in Central America to avoid the LONG flight. I'd highly recommend taking a trip to komodo. The locals said it is how Bali was 30 years ago. We loved it. Any way. Hope this helps someone avoid the disappointment we experienced.
Will also recommend hiring a driver when you're there. Ride hailing is predatory there and you will be taken advantage of. They also have imposter taxi services that will strongarm you when you arrive at the destination.

A driver is fairly affordable
Paid a local guide that my wife knew to show us around, way better experience since if you look like a tourist there they treat you differently and charge you more for everything.

Indonesia still requires a COVID vaccine to enter, so assume they're still masked up and in the middle of pandemic theater there.
Like the US? Not seeing widespread masking.

I'm sure Bali is still as cheap and beautiful as it was when I was last there a few times 10-15 years before, but I'd rather visit Vietnam or Thailand for similar prices and a lot more to do.
Nope, no masking, but yes, they do ask for proof of vaccination upon arrival.

What's your opinion of Phuket?
I went for a few days after visiting Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang rai. Personally, I prefer the subdued life of Chiang rai and mai. Much more laid back, and you can interact with the environment, including the elephant sanctuaries.

Phuket is a lot of craziness, lot of traffic, and a lot of lady boys (joking but it's true). It's also very hot. I went for the scuba diving and it was great.

like how much affordable, with a driver for say like one-day?
Family went there 2 months ago. We spent $80 for a van that fits 8 pax.

is that how Bali is now? I can remember when it was innocent and pristine. What's happened to Bandung?

My recommendation honestly is not be near Kuta or Sem, Ubud is where you want to be to get away. Kuta and Sem are kind of party atmospheres so those pictures you're seeing are mostly the Ubud area.

I spent a week in Ubud and it was one of the more tranquil times of any vacations i've taken.

Do you like surfing. Then Bali has consistent waves. Not huge but always there.

Relatively safe but robberies can happen at night (just like US).
Beware the money changer huts. The rate is good cause they do it fast and cheat. Thats the business.

If you don't surf beware the south west coast can have tons of trash in the sea. Its pretty gross. Imagine swimming in bottles and plastic bags.

Many beautiful parts but yes lots of tourist traps

I've stayed at Kaamala Resort in Ubud. Nice boutique hotel, well deserving of 4 stars with excellent staff, a nice (highly-Instagrammable) breakfast, and some monkey visitors. It's at the end of a street, but conveniently located by the city center--do plan for wild traffic though. We'd have our driver drop us off about a 15 min walk away to avoid sitting in 40 min of traffic to get back. We stayed in a villa with the private pool--which we used a grand total of zero times, and the tub which we used once in our 5 day stay. Those amenities were nice to have, but there's tons out there to see. For this price, a no-brainer for someone who wants to go to Bali.

Bali is lovely and it's nice to see an update that the laws about unmarried sex don't apply to tourists

What's your opinion of Phuket?
Was there last Dec 2022 and two weeks this Jan/Feb 2023 and many times in prior years. In short, Russians have taken over Phuket. Krabi and changing Pattaya as well. Dec 2022 Phuket was empty, Jan 2023 250,000 Russians flew in to Phukett airport and it was very obvious. 4/5 years ago millions of Russians in Phuket. Several years ago the Phuket airport signs were changed to Russian and Thai - this is inside the airport. Many menus are in Russian now. And several years ago a Russian conciliate was built in Phuket. Thai corruption for the ruble. And Russian immigration agents working with Thai immigration are a part of it.

I swore ~5 years ago Id never go to Phuket again but covid changed that for the past couple years. Russia, China in lockdown. After this year, Phuket is again off my list unless the ruble falls.

btw - My wife is Thai and we stay there 3 months every year, even during covid. Which was the ultimate time to be there. So, maybe Im more particular than most when it comes to traveling Thailand.

Don't want to go too deep into it because it is somewhat irrelevant to Bali, but a lot of male were fleeing the conscription order that was in place in the later parts of 2022. That would sure drive up the numbers you see at the airport.

I had a friend who was in Thailand in early 2022 and enjoyed it very much. I may have just missed my opportunity to visit during an unusually nice time.
