You could, but in-walls like these are intended for what's called an infinite baffle installation. This basically means (big simplification) that the speakers should be free floating - no cabinet, the wall cavity is the cabinet. Restricting the speakers to a shallow enclosure would mess with these, cutting out a lot of the low-end.

Cutting a hole in your drywall is a lot less work than building a box, if you already have the hassle of hiding speaker wire anyway. Any specific reason you don't want to?

Just got my four installed, surround and surround backs for 7.1

They sound great! Solid speakers for the money, and very well made. I feel these will last.
