tldr: Needs to be a ported in number. GV works (create a new gmail account, pay google $3 to port out). People who dont care about the 12 months mint service can just discard the activation kit and treat this as a $289 unlocked phone.

That happened a couple years ago on the black friday deal with sim cards bought before the black friday sale ....
I just activated my 10G plan sim card from this deal AFTER the 45 days expiration. And it still worked, giving me 1 years of service (ported GV number).
BTW 10Gb became 15Gb/month on Mint - free bonus
