Everywhere else traveling by train is fast, efficient, inexpensive and safe. In the US it is slow, in-efficient, and very expensive.
Amtrak should do more sleeper cars promotion. A roommate from Los Angeles to New York for $2000+ is crazy
They never have any deals like this for western US destinations....

YEah not worth traveling on Amtrak, slow, long. Wish we had high speed trains in US instead of flying all over. Would be nice to go cross country in a high speed train but it is never going to happen.
Bullet trains would make flying less necessary. Imagine a continental rail in the US.

Just do a search. Madrid, Spain to Barcelona, Spain a distance of about 387 miles takes 2 1/2 hours by train. Distance between NYC to DC is about 288 miles via Acela (Amtrak's faster ride) takes about 3 hours. Really do you need much proof??

That's a dumb oversimplification. America is an egalitarian society that blends the urban and the rural, in a legacy spirit of common carrier universal service - a gigantic factor in travel time, is how many stops along the way. Apples and oranges.

They sometimes auction off room upgrade on overnight traveling, but its only right before departure and you have to already be in a very pricy, very small Roomette. On the Southwest Chief which is Los Angeles to Chicago I was able to get an upgrade for $200 when it would have cost around $600. The full trip takes 3 days and a few grand. The meals for roomed passengers are 5 star meals with a waiter. Coach is rough and they don't get the same meals
