I was able to have Best Buy price match this via chat easily. I know there's talk about the real value of Apple and how many of them are overpriced (I foresee the comments). However, for those who are seeking a Macbook Pro, this is the cheapest that this specific model has been.

Note: This is the late 2021 model, not the new 2023 model.

Key Features:
  • Apple M1 Max 10-Core Chip
  • 32GB Unified Memory
  • Apple M1 Max Chip 32-Core GPU
  • 1TB SSD
  • Liquid Retina XDR

Not sure. Good question. Mine was in stock. I think they usually only price match in stock items, but I could be wrong…

This is why I will no longer be buying new Macs: the mainboard often overloads and kills the soldered flash storage, making recovery impossible and junking the entire computer.

As I write this on the best-ever Mac laptop: mid-2015. The last Steve Jobs model. Not a Tim Apple non-repairable atrocity.

I thought 2012 was the last year for user-upgradable RAM?

Yes, for RAM. But SSDs were replaceable / upgradeable thru 2015.

Copy. I think I may disagree with you about how limiting it became to get stuck w/ the same amount of RAM for the lifetime of the computer, but I do think we both agree that the "solder everything" mentality really damaged the opinion of the brand for some of us.

Apologize if this is a dumb question, but what is the equivalent of this in a non-mac laptop? The ram and disk size are easy enough, but what's an equivalent processor, etc?

Smoking deal for a 16" MBP if you can get it.

Fact is, ALL drives fail. Not if, but when.

thanks for the links MrSkeptic, but the zdnet article is 2 years old. Both CCC and superduper have been able to make mac external bootable drives. Additionally, you can make external boot drives with OS X, but it must be a Thunderbotl drive, not USB C. (although I have heard it does work)

Depends where you can find it. The 14" M1 Max equivalent to the one posted retailed for $3099.99 on release, but I believe with the M2 Max version released, they were marked down to $2899.99 or less pretty much everywhere. Microcenter doesn't seem to have any of the 14" M1 Max's in stock anymore, but the 14" M2 Max that replaced it is currently on sale for $2899.99 at Microcenter: https://www.microcenter.com/produ...space-gray

Might find another retailer with M1 Max stock still left who is selling for cheaper, though they typically move pretty quickly once the discounts come out.

Go ahead and switch to Windows because what you want is never going to be available from Apple.

Drives fail. Yes. But turning a perfectly good computer into e-waste when they do is the New Apple. Did you even bother to watch the failed repair video?

FWIW, my nearly 11 year old mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro is still trucking along amazingly with the original SSD running MacOS Ventura (with the help of OCP). I've only had to replace a fan and it's due for another battery replacement. It's a little slow at some tasks these days, but is still leaps and bounds more usable than my corporate HP EliteBook that's only two years old. It's such a POS despite having a Core i7 and 16GB of RAM, like my MBP from 2012.
